The skilled speaker was born Sally Rebecca Kohn on March 27, 1977, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, to Donald and Melinda Kohn. Her father worked as an engineer, while her mother was a computer programmer. Her family is of Jewish ethnic heritage.

Sally Kohn attended high school in Allentown before leaving for Washington, where she bagged a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the prestigious George Washington University. She furthered her education, graduating from New York University with a joint degree in law and public administration in 2002. While at the School of Law, she became a Root Tilden public service scholar. She received a master’s degree from Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service in public administration.

After that, she worked as the executive director for Third Wave Foundation, a foremost feminist organization.

She completed a fellowship program at the Ford Foundation, where one of her responsibilities included managing annual grants worth millions of dollars and distributing them to organizations around the country that were fighting for social justice. While in the program, she also served as a strategic advisor to the Social Justice Infrastructure Funders.

Kohn has also served as the senior campaign strategist for the Centre for Communities Change, managing ideas and leading innovations for the organization. She has been instrumental to the creation of numerous initiatives focused on reforming rural and urban communities in terms of health care, representation, and social justice.
