Sam Rockwell is an American actor who is well known in Hollywood. He has a very long catalogue of films he has featured in since he made his professional debut in 1990. He has enjoyed a pretty successful career which has spanned over two decades. Sam Rockwell was born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, San Mateo, California. The Seven Psychopaths actor seems to have gotten his acting talents by hereditary as his parents, Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess were actors. Rockwell is of mixed ancestry -Irish, German, English, and Dutch. Though born in California, the family moved to the Bronx, New York and later to Manhattan. He moved back to San Francisco, California with his father after his parents got divorced and separated when he was just five years old.

He grew up in San Francisco with his father but spent the summers with his mother who had moved to New York. Rockwell attended Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA) in San Francisco but did not finish before he dropped out. He later finished up his high school education at Urban Pioneers. He rekindled his passion for acting while at this school and upon graduation, he moved to New York to pursue a career in acting.

At age 10, Sam Rockwell showcased his acting skills when he acted alongside his mother. However, his first major break came while he was still in high school when he starred in the 1989 film, Clownhouse. After high school, he went full throttle in pursuing his newly found passion. He left San Francisco to New York and spent two years in training at the William Esper Acting Studio. In 1990, he appeared in the TV show, Over the Limit and also in HBO’s teen drama, Lifestories: Families in Crisis in 1992.

Between 1994 and 1996, he starred in seven movies: The Search for One-eye Jimmy (1994); Drunks (1995); Glory Daze (1995); Mercy (1995); Bad Liver and a Broken Heart (1996); Basquiat (1996) and Box of Moonlight (1996). The “Box of Moonlight” film pushed him further up the ladder of recognition as it generated a lot of positive reviews. He landed another role in the 1997 John Duigan’s film, he found himself the star of another critically lauded film, Lawn Dogs. His performance in this film earned him two independent awards for “Best Actor”. In 1998, he also got the nod for a role in the comedy-drama Jerry and Tom and Safe Men.

In 1997, Rockwell won two Best Actor Awards from two independent bodies – the Montreal World Film Festival and the Sitges – Catalan International Film Festival – for his role in the 1997 film, Lawn Dogs. In 2000, he and his cast were nominated by the Screen Actors Guild for the Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Theatrical Motion Picture Award for the film Green Mile (1999). At the Berlin International Film Festival in 2003, Rockwell won a Best Actor Award for the film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002). He was also nominated for the Satelite Awards in the Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role, Musical Or Comedy category in the same 2003 and 2004. The 2004 nomination came for his role in the 2003 film, Matchstick Men.

In 2008, the film Choke earned him two nominations; The Satelite Awards for Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Musical Or Comedy and Sundance Film Festival for Special Jury Prize. He won the later. In had five nominations in 2009 with the movie Moon and won one – the Seattle International Film Festival nomination for Best Actor.

The next year picked up from where the previous left off and brought with it eight nominations. For the 2010 film Conviction, he was nominated by Hollywood Film Awards (for Supporting Actor of the Year which he won), Boston Film Festival (for Best Actor which he also won), Washington DC Area Film Critics Association AwardsUtah Film Critics Association Awards and St. Louis Film Critics Association for Best Supporting Actor. The film, Moon also got him three nominations in the same year.  He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2011 by Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and Iowa Film Critics Awards for the film, Conviction.
