Samuel Henry John Worthington was born on August 2, 1976, in Godalming, Surrey, in South East England, to English parents who later moved to Perth, Western Australia when he was just six months old. He was raised with his only sister Lucinda in Warnbro, Rockingham by his mother Jeanne J. and father Ronald W. Worthington, a power plant employee. Growing up in the city, Worthington attended John Curtin College of the Arts, a school that specialized in the dramatic arts, where he majored in drama but later dropped out. It was reported that after he left college, his father sent him on a one-way trip to Cairns, Queensland, with just $400, and told him to work his way home and grow up a bit. While he worked odd jobs, constructions and bricklaying, he auditioned for the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and got accepted on scholarship.
