Sarah Michelle Gellar was born on April 14, 1977, in Long Island, New York, the only child of her parents Rosellen (née Greenfield) and Arthur Gellar, both of whom were Jewish. After her parents’ divorce when she was 7, she moved with her mother to the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan where she was raised. Her relationship with her father was mainly strained even until he died in 2001.
Growing up, Sarah Michelle Gellar was a very active kid. In addition to her budding acting career, she was a competitive figure skater and also earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Despite the hindrances of her busy acting job, she completed her high school diploma with a 4.0 grade average at the Professional Children’s School in New York City.
