He is prominent in the food circle where he has established himself as one of the nation’s top chefs and restaurateurs. Biography
The food maven was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, the United States on the 19th day of February 1971 to an American father and an Italian mother. He has two siblings. As a child, he was close to his mother and enjoyed her sausage and peppers which he’d rather eat over a fancy meal for his last supper. Apparently, her culinary expertise rubbed off on him as he began cooking at a very young age. By the time he was 11, he was already taking cooking classes at the local community college. Besides mastering the art of cooking, Scott Conant was also athletic and would have been a baseball player.
At 15, he enrolled in W.F. Kaynor Technical High School for culinary arts after which he attended the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) which was where his career took form and flight. He takes inspiration from his Italian-American heritage which he also credits with his balance between different cooking styles. However, he is quick to add that he doesn’t do the traditional Italian fare but combines different ingredients from different parts of the country to create his own style.

While Scott Conant is known as a restauranteur, he didn’t launch his career, opening one. He started by working hard and diligently as a chef in various restaurants and brought culinary glory to each. Following those successes, he went on to open many restaurants across the nation and beyond its shores.
Conant interned at New York City restaurant San Domenico and after his graduation, he went to Munich, Germany where he mastered the art of pastry at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof for the next one year following which he broke onto the restaurant scene. He returned to San Domenico where he worked as a sous chef and in turn, helped the restaurant earn three stars from The New York Times.
Following that, he became chef de cuisine at the famed Italian restaurant, Il Toscanaccio in 1995. He went on to revamp two other Italian spots including Barolo in SoHo and Chianti on the Upper East Side. Then he became executive chef at City Eatery, which earned glowing reviews under his leadership. Moreover, his modern take on Italian cuisine further garnered attention to him, earning him a loyal following and a glowing two-star review from The New York Times in 2000.
On the heels of those successes, Conant started his long-term journey to opening restaurants with L’Impero in 2002. It earned a three-star review from The New York Times, won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant and was lauded by top publications such as Gourmet and Food & Wine. Then, other restaurants followed.
Conant opened an elegant Italian restaurant in midtown Manhattan named Alto. In 2008, he brought his own vision of sophisticated, savory Italian cooking to life with Scarpetta in Chelsea, Manhattan which now operates in four other locations including Toronto, Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Scarpetta received a three-star review from The New York Times and New York Magazine with Esquire magazine naming it one of the “Best New Restaurants in America.”
In 2010, he opened a casual wine bar, D.O.C.G. Enoteca in Las Vegas which closed on June 20, 2017. He also unveiled his Culinary Suite in SoHo where he interacts directly with guests and brings them his special brand of hospitality through private dinners, cocktail parties, and cooking demos. He has several other restaurants outside of New York including Mora Italian, a modern osteria in Phoenix; The Ponte, a contemporary Italian restaurant in Los Angeles; Masso Osteria at Red Rock Casino, a Resort & Spa in Las Vegas; CORSAIR by Scott Conant at Turnberry Isle, Miami.
Most recently, Conant opened Italian Steakhouse Cellaio Restaurant at Resorts World Catskills in Monticello, New York in May 2018 and will also be opening an Italian restaurant in LaGuardia airport called Osteria Fusco.
Conant has appeared on the Today Show and on Home Shopping Network with a line of cookware, “Scott Conant’s Signature Creations in 2007. His other on-screen credits include The Chew, CBS’ The Talk, Live with Kelly & Michael and Good Morning America. He was a judge on the reality food-competition television show, 24 Hour Restaurant Battle in 2010 and now appears as a judge on Food Network’s cornerstone show, Chopped.
Beyond launching restaurants and appearing on TV, Conant has also published several cookbooks including New Italian Cooking (2005), Bold Italian (2008), and The Scarpetta Cookbook (2013).
