He was born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom on July 22, 1965, in Chandler, Arizona as the last of the four children of his parents Richard and Carol Hickenbottom. His other, all older siblings include Randy, Scott, and Shari. He had a peculiar upbringing that one would say influenced his choice of profession. He grew up with a military father and as such, discipline was a rule heavily enforced to keep the children in line at all time. His father’s job also ensured that he grew up in different places at different times. Of the places the family lived, he spent some time in Reading, Berkshire, England, but also did some growing up in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Randolph High School on Randolph Air Force Base after which he proceeded to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas but did not have the patience to study, so he dropped out and went for what he really wanted to do.

Shawn Michaels’ strict upbringing did one good thing for him, it gave him a mind of his own from an early stage so that at the age of 12, he already knew what he wanted to do with himself. He began by performing wrestling routines in his high school’s talent show, he went as far as using fake blood to make it look real and good too. He had previously been involved in the school’s football team right from when he was 6 and became the captain of the team before he graduated.

Professional Wrestling Career

From when he was little, Shawn never liked the name Michael, so everyone just called him Shawn instead, but after he dropped out of college to fully pursue his wrestling career, he decided to adopt Shawn Michaels as his ring name. After he left school, he began training under Mexican professional wrestler Jose Lothario in preparation for his debut on the 16th of October 1984 at the National Wrestling Alliance’s (NWA) Mid-South Wrestling territory. He lost the match, but spectators and professionals alike were impressed with his first attempt and so, more opportunities came calling.

By January the next year, he made his first appearance for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), the NWA territory in Dallas, Texas. He made many appearances on many territories of the NWA, winning some and losing others as well as fighting alone and in a team until he made his national debut in the American Wrestling Association when he was just 20 years old.

With the world as his stage, Shawn Michaels went ahead to win hearts in the ring and do exploits that have become a trademark his fans cannot forget. Of the many things he did other than just wrestling, Shawn had headlined major pay-per-view WWE events between 1989 and 2010, he has closed Wrestlemania 5 times, he is a co-founder and the original leader of D-Generation X tag team which he formed with the likes of Hunter Hearst Helmsley (Triple H), Chyna and Rick Rude in 1997.
