Silas Weir Mitchell is an American actor who is known for playing mostly volatile characters. From his prominent roles as an insane prison inmate Charles “Haywire” Patoshik in Prison Break and Donny Jones in My Name Is Earl, he definitely knows how to punch a pack into his roles and bring his characters to life. He has also had recurring roles on the series 24 and was cast in the main role as the lycanthropic character Monroe in Grimm.

He was born Silas Weir Mitchell Neilson on 30th September 1969 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is one of the five children (three girls and two boys) born to his stockbroker father and homemaker mother and he was raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just a little distance from his birthplace. His passion for the stage and screen was firmly posited in him after he participated in a production of Hansel and Gretel in third grade.
When the time came for him to acquire formal education, Silas Weir enrolled at The Montgomery Country Day School, formerly in Gladwyne PA for his elementary school before proceeding to a college-preparatory boarding school, St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he graduated from in 1987. Four years later, he became a graduate of Brown University, Rhode Island, where he majored in Theatre and Religion. Following his graduation, he acted in minor theatre productions for sometime in New York City after which he left to further his studies.
He pitched his tent with the University of California San Diego where he enrolled in their Master of Fine Arts program, graduating in 1995. Therein, he wrote a Masters thesis titled What We Make Is Not Ours. Then, the time came for him to fully embark on his acting sojourn.

Silas Weir Mitchell has steady work from television appearances in the 90s albeit in minor roles. Some of his earlier appearances include Silk Stalkings, The Big Easy, Quicksilver Highway, ER, Vengeance Unlimited, The X-Files, Inferno and The Pretender.
Then in early 2000, he had recurring roles in series such as The Practice, Nash Bridges and 24. However, his specialty seems to be playing wild-eyed, deranged characters as seen in his recurring roles in My Name Is Earl (2005-2008) as Earl’s ex-con friend Donny Jones, and Prison Break (2005-2007) as Charles “Haywire” Patoshik also starring . He auditioned to play Nick Vera on Cold Case (2003) but was eventually cast in his forte as the mentally unstable recurring character James Hogan which remains one of his most notable roles.
His other TV credits include CSI: Miami (2004), CSI: NY (2005; with ), Law & Order: SVU (2009), Burn Notice (2008), Dexter (2007; with ), Monk (2006). In 2008, he also made an appearance in the seventh and final season of the U.S. cop show The Shield and the following year, he starred in Fox TV show Mental, The Good Guys in 2010 and The Mentalist in 2011.
Mitchell has also starred in numerous films such as ‘s Private Parts and Julian Po in 1997, The Patriot (1998), Absence of the Good (1999), Rat Race (2001), The Whole Ten Yards (2004) as Yermo co-starring , Flags of Our Fathers (2006), The Gray Man (2007) as Albert Fish, Jr., Halloween 2 (2009), and Heaven’s Rain (2010).
While Silas Weir has racked up a lot of outstanding works in his over two decades career, he got his biggest acclaim as a sensitive and cultured lycanthrope Monroe in the NBC TV series Grimm. From 2011 to 2017, he provided the series with both comic relief and romance.
