Professional basketball player Stanley Johnson joined the Detroit Pistons following the 2015 NBA Draft. A first-round draft pick, Johnson had a highly successful amateur career both in high school and college before turning pro in 2015. Though he is yet to find the cutting edge of his 3-year plus career, the NBA star still holds a lot of promise owing to his antecedents.

Stanley Herbert Johnson Jr. was born in Anaheim, California on May 29, 1996. He was a standout player during his days at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California and among numerous other highlights, he won 4 consecutive CIF State championship titles with the school.

Johnson earned CIF All-state first team honors both as a freshman and sophomore and was also named to the CIF All-league first team and the All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division I first team in his sophomore season. His junior season was rather uneventful, however, he topped off his high school career with an impressive run during his senior season.

He was named a First-team HS All-American by USA Today and also named High School National Player of the Year by MaxPreps.com. He won the 2014 California Mr. Basketball award and equally featured in the McDonald’s All-American, the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit.

A 5-star recruit, Stanley Johnson was one of the the the top rated players of the high school class of 2014. He chose the University of Arizona among several offers for his college career. Though shortlived, Johnson’s one-season stint with the Arizona Wildcats could be described as explosive. The talented youngster started in all 38 appearances with the team averaging 28.4 minutes, 13.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game as a freshman.

For his outstanding performance, he received All-Pac-12 Freshman team and first-team All-Pac-12 honors and was also named to the Pac-12 Tournament All-Tournament team. He won the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year award and was named to the District IX All-District Team and All-Freshman All-American Team by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He equally received the inaugural Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award for the 2014-15 NCAA Division I season.

In April 2015, Stanley Johnson announced his decision to enter the 2015 NBA Draft in giving up his remaining 3 years of college eligibility. He was eventually drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the first round as the 8th overall pick.

NBA Career Stats

Johnson kicked off his career with the Pistons on a high note following an impressive performance with the team during the 2015 offseason. He recorded a team-leading 16.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks in 5 total appearances at the 2015 Summer League. As a rookie, he started off the bench for the greater part of the 2015-16 season finishing with a scoring average of 8.1 points and career-highs of 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.

After making 21 appearances in the 2016-17 NBA season, Johnson was assigned to the Detriot Pistons’ NBA Development League (D-League) affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive on December 10, 2016. He was recalled the following day though he did not earn playing time for the rest of the season. His scoring average dipped to 4.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game for the entire season.

The NBA star earned regular playing time in the 2017-18 season during which he started 50 games in 69 total appearances. His productivity equally improved as his scoring average upped to 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Family Life

Stanley Johnson is the only child of his parents – Karen Taylor and Stanley Johnson Sr. His parents’ marriage ended in a divorce after which he was raised by his mother in Fullerton, California.

Apparently, the NBA star is not the only member of the family with amazing sports talents as his mother Karen, at 6-foot-2, was also a basketball star in her prime. She played college basketball at Jackson State University after which she played professionally in Europe. She is credited to have taught the NBA star the fundamentals of the brown leather game from a very young age. Johnson’s mother was inducted into Jackson University Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. However, she passed on in the summer of 2015, just before her son’s NBA career took off.
