David Letterman’s former assistant was born Stephanie Anne Birkitt on the 7th of January, 1975 in Plymouth, New Hampshire. She is the daughter of a dentist and a mother who is an assistant principal. After her high school graduation, Stephanie Birkitt proceeded to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. From there, she bagged a bachelor degree in history and a minor in communication in 1997.

Her media career started from her days in the college at CBS News as an intern in 1996. She also worked for 48 Hours and the Late Show the same year. After her graduation, Stephanie Birkitt joined the News network as a member of the CBS page program and also worked at 48 Hours as an associate producer on segments for correspondent . However, it didn’t take long for her to discover that she was not cut out for news.

Upon her discovery, she decided to apply as an office worker for David Letterman having appeared on the Late Show during her spring internship in 1996. On December 26, 2000, four years after her first appearance, she joined the show again on Letterman’s invitation. From January 2011, she became a regular on-air feature of the show and by the following year, she started to assume a character outside of her job as Letterman’s assistant.

In 2002, USA Today named her among its Pop Candy’s 100 People of the Year! list. When she is not interpreting any role or giving life to a character, Stephanie Birkitt gives on-air reports. She reported from the sites of the Winter Olympics in 2002 and in 2006. Birkitt also co-hosted The Tony Mendez Show, a spin-off program with Tony Mendez (aka the cue card boy) that was hosted on the Late Show website. She made her final appearance on the Late Show in the autumn of 2008. She made more than 250 appearances on the program between her first and final appearances on the show.

While she carried on with her career in the media, Stephanie nursed a dream to become an attorney. She went in for law school and by the time she made her final appearance on the Late Show, in June 2008, she had completed her studies, earning a Juris Doctor from the Yeshiva University’s Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. One year later, she passed the New York State and Connecticut bar examinations and has been a licensed attorney since 2011. She has also had an active Connecticut lawyer license since 2009.

During her time on the show, Stephanie Birkitt served some delight to the audience as the gawky office assistant who held the ability to crack up the titan of comedy, making the edgy, aloof Letterman seem relaxed and fun. However, it seemed the boss wanted more than an assistant, like more of a mistress. A rapport was established between the duo which finally turned to a love affair.

Everything, however, crystallized into form when the extortion attempt came up. That was when their on-screen chemistry and dynamic became clearer. Then, we realized that the duo wasn’t just playing mock lovers, they were wildly, inappropriately, in love with each other.

It became clearer, those on-screen magic — the arm punching, the pet names wasn’t for nothing. Talk about pet names, Letterman had a host of them for his assistant including Smitty, Monty, Kitty, Gunther, and Dutch.

Stephanie Birkitt is the ex-girlfriend of Joe Halderman

Robert Joe Halderman was the producer of the CBS crime series 48 Hours and Birkitt’s ex-boyfriend. During the time she had the vibes going with her boss, Stephanie was dating Joe who was all those while worried about the relationship between the two.

While he was wondering what was going on between those two as he was often left at home, lonely while they enjoyed their time together, he found Birkitt’s diary where she has documented her sexual exploits with Letterman. The diary and the email she shared with her boss became the basis of the extortion that he allegedly placed to the talk-show host.

Dave admitted to having sexual relations with some of his female staffers in an episode of his show in 2009 while he was married to his second wife .

After the extortion attempt came to light, Joe was sentenced to six months in jail for the attempted extortion while Stephanie Birkitt was placed on a paid leave of absence from the Late Show on October 7, 2009. She has, however, remained silent on what went down during her days on The Late Show. Birkitt is now an attorney in California.

On Dave’s part, despite the glaring evidence of his misconduct and also women coming forward to testify against him, he was given a pass and retained. Also, his shows have continued to garner large views.
