Family: Father

Steve Kerr was born on the 27th of September 1965 to Malcolm H. Kerr (father) and Ann Zwicker (mother) in Beirut, Lebanon. Malcolm and Ann had three other children. Kerr’s grandfather (Stanley Kerr) had settled in Beirut and raised his family there. His grandfather was involved in the heroic rescuing of women and orphans in Aleppo and Marash while working with the American humanitarian organization, Near East Relief. The organization was formed after the Armenian and Assyrian genocides.

Malcolm (Steve’s father) was a University lecturer who specialized in Middle East Academics. Like his father, rather than return to America, he decided to raise his own family in Beirut; explaining why Steve was born there. Invariably, Steve had to spend much of his childhood in Lebanon and other countries in the Middle East, attending their schools. He, however, attended the Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles.

On the 18th of January 1984, tragedy struck. Steve’s father, the then president of the American University in Beirut was shot dead by gunmen (who were later identified to be Islamic Jihadists) in the hallway by his office. The gruesome murder of his father left Steve traumatized. However, he found solace in his family and basketball. Steve Kerr went on to have a fantastic college basketball season that year. In 1988, he eventually graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelors degree in General Studies.

Wife, Son, Daughter

Steve is married to Margot Kerr since 1990. They are blessed with three wonderful children-two sons Nick and Matthew as well as a daughter named Maddy. Nick and Maddy inherited their father’s predilection for sports. Nick played college basketball at San Diego University and is currently a video assistant in the coaching staff of San Antonio Spurs. He hopes to be coach one day like his father.

Maddy, on the other hand, is an excellent volleyball player. She was one of the best at her high school (Torry Pines High School in Southern California). Maddy has won 2 San Diego Section Division I championships. She also made the “Fab 50” selection by Volleyball Magazine. Maddy was ranked no. 65 by Prepvolleyball.com and has also tried out for the American female volleyball team.
