Thabo Sefolosha is one of only few basketball players who could be termed as versatile, not only for his diverse positions on the court but for the vast leagues he has played in, ranging from leagues in countries like Switzerland, France, Italy, Turkey, and the much appreciated National Basketball Association (NBA) in America.

Not only is Thabo Patrick Sefolosha the first Switzerland basketball player to ever play in the NBA but he was also named as the best Swiss basketball player of all-time by Swiss local newspaper Freiburger Nachrichten.

Thabo Sefolosha Biography

Born on May 2, 1984, in Vevey Switzerland to a South African musician father and a Swiss artist mother. Thabo is of South African ethnicity and Swiss nationality. He speaks English, French and Italian fluently, arguably as a result of the fact that he has lived in quite a number of countries.

On the court, Thabo Sefolosha is a shooting guard/small forward. At 17, his professional basketball career began when he signed with Switzerland’s top domestic league side, TegaRivera Basket. He played for the Swiss team between 2001 and 2002. After leaving the topflight Swiss team, Sefolosha crossed borders to join the French basketball team, ElanChalon. Following his move to France, he spent his first year playing for the team’s under-21 side. After proving himself with the under-21 side, he got a call-up to the senior team. His playing time at ElanChalon was brought to an end when Thabo Sefolosha’s agent and the team’s management could not come to terms over the player’s contract. Sefolosha then agreed on a year deal to join Italian basketball team Angelico Biella in 2005. His time with the Italian franchise did not stretch longer than a season.

In 2006, Thabo realized his dream of playing in the NBA after he was picked in the first round and 13th overall in the 2006 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. After the drafting, he was immediately traded to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Rodney Carney. When Sefolosha made his debut for the Bulls on October 31, 2006, he became the first Swiss basketball player to ever play professional basketball in the NBA. He continued to play for the Bulls up until 2009 when he was traded on the deadline day to the Oklahoma City Thunder. In the season he signed for the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was named in the All-NBA Defensive Second Team for the 2009-10 season.

While he was still a registered Oklahoma City Thunder’s player, he took the advantage of the 2011 NBA lockout to sign an out-clause deal with Fenerbahçe Ulker in the Turkish basketball league, making it possible for him to represent the Turkish outfits in the Euro league matches and still return to his parent team Oklahoma City Thunder. In the latter year of the 2011-2012 season, Sefolosha and the Oklahoma City Thunder lost to Miami Heat in the NBA finals.

In the summer of 2014, Sefolosha signed with the Atlanta Hawks. He spent most of his time in his first season with the Hawks on the sidelines due to injuries. After 3 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, Sefolosha moved on to his current NBA side Utah Jazz in 2017. 2018 did not start well for the NBA player as he was suspended for five games without pay for violating the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program terms.

Who is His Wife?

Off the court, the basketball player is married to Bertille Sefolosha. Bertille and Thabo first met in Chalon-sur-Saone, where Bertille was studying and Thabo was playing for Elan Chalon under-21 team. Bertille, like her husband Thabo, also has an African origin, she is a Cameroonian-French.

The couple are always running charity programs for less privileged Africans, not just in Africa but also Africans around the world. They have two lovely daughters together, Lesedi Sefolosha and Naledi Sefolosha.

Family – Parents

Thabo Sefolosha was born to a South African father, Patrick Sefolosha and a Swiss mother, Christine Sefolosha. His dad who also is a musician comes from Mamelodi and his mum is of Swiss nationality, she is a painter born in Montreux, Switzerland. His parents got married in 1982 but got separated after 11 years of marriage.

Thabo isn’t the only child born to Patrick and Christine Sefolosha, he has five brothers and two sisters. Like Thabo, his elder brother Kgomostso is a basketball player but he never played in the NBA.

The biracial professional NBA star stands at 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 99kg. He has dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. His other body measurements like his chest, biceps, and waist have not been revealed, but being that he is an athlete, Thabo no doubt is well built for his sport.
