Not many music groups from the United Kingdom in recent times have been able to achieve success while still having divided opinion on their work as The 1975 have managed to do. The band, which originated from Manchester, England in the early 2000s, has made music of different genres, such as electropop, funk rock, indie pop, indie rock, pop, pop rock, and rock. Their diversity in music has led people to describe them as underrated and surprisingly, overhyped. They have been described as the most hated as well as the most loved band in the world.

The 1975: Biography

The 1975 was formed in 2002 while its members were attending Wilmslow High School in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England. As the story goes, the band members were drawn together for their love for music but they officially came together after the local council worker organized a number of shows for teenagers. This prompted the band’s members to organize themselves and perform at one of the shows. They subsequently went ahead to perform at local clubs where they played covers to other people’s songs before eventually getting to write an original song of theirs.

When the time came for the group to pick a name, they first settled for ‘Me; and You Versus Them’. They later changed their name a couple of times, from ‘Forever Drawing Six’, to ‘Talkhouse’, to ‘the Slowdown’, then ‘Bigsleep’, and later ‘Drive Like I Do’, before landing on the name in which they are known by today, ‘The 1975’.

After ten years since their formation, the band in August 2012 were able to get their act together and release their first body of work, an EP titled Facedown. Their lead song of the album “The City” gave them their first airplay on UK national radio. A few months later, in November 2012, the group again released another EP titled Sex which once again garnered them national radio attention. Following their rise in popularity, the group embarked on a United Kingdom and Ireland tour before later heading to the United States.

In March and May 2013, The 1975 released two EPS; Music for Cars and IV, which produced a few songs that made the charts and garnered international airplay. These releases, backed with an extensive tour, helped push their self-titled debut album which was released on 2 September 2013. The album sold over 2 million copies in their home country and also went platinum in the United States. They have since that time released three more albums; I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It (2016), A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships (2018), and Notes on a Conditional Form (2019).

The 1975 comprises of four members; , Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel, all of whom have been with the band since 2002.

Matty Healy, who was born on the 8th of April, 1989, is the frontman of the group. He serves as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and pianist, but also plays the keyboards. He is the son of English actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy.

Adam Hann, who was born on the 20th of June, 1988, is the lead guitarist who also plays the keyboard, synthesizer, sampler, and contributes with vocals.

Ross MacDonald, born on the 6th of June, 1989, is the bassist in the group. He also plays the keyboards, synthesizer, sampler.

George Daniel, born 23rd of March, 1990, is the drummer and percussionist, who also contributes with vocals and plays keyboards.

1. The 1975 are the first band from the United Kingdom to debut at Number 1 with their first three albums ever since Arctic Monkeys achieved the feat.

2. The band’s name was inspired by the beat poetry book of American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac. According to Healy, they found scribblings that read “1 June, The 1975” on the back page of his poetry book and opted to go with it.

3. The 1975 frontman, Matt Healy, is known to have used drugs, specifically opiates and anxiety meds, for a number of years. In 2017, he began regularly smoking heroin, something he said helped him balance the polarity between mass acceptance/connecting with thousands of people and then genuine loneliness/spending the night alone.

When the time came for the band to make their third studio album; A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, Healy opted to get clean and therefore checked himself into a rehabilitation facility in Barbados where he received intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy for six weeks.

4. The band has won several awards over the years, one of which was a Grammy Award nomination for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
