The four-piece music band The Interrupters has its origin in Los Angeles, California. The band is composed of lead vocalist Aimee Interrupter and three brothers Jesse Bivona, Justin Bivona and Kevin Bivona. They specialize in a music subgenre known as ska punk and they have released up to three studio albums since their formation in 2011. Among other highlights of their career, the Interrupters performed at the 2019 Coachella festival.

The Interrupters – Bio

The three Bivona brothers started playing together on a band named “Telacasters”. They were touring with two other bands The Dirty Heads and Sugar Ray in 2009 when they met Aimee Allen who was a solo artist at the time. One of the Bivona brothers Kevin started writing songs with Aimee after which they invited the other two brothers to play instruments. Their recording sessions proved successful and after working together for a while, the band was officially formed in 2011.

Aimee Allen

The most famous member of this band, for obvious reasons, is Aimee Allen. When she performs for the band, she takes up the stage moniker Aimee Interrupter. Being a natural performer, Aimee equally assumes her musical and much more entertaining persona each time she mounts the stage.

She was discovered in 2002 by music producer and former “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson. She recorded a debut album which never saw the light of day although her debut single was released. However, some of the songs on the album have been reworked by other artists over the years. She later released her first solo album A Little Happiness in 2009 and also worked briefly as a radio host before the formation of the Interrupters in 2011.

Kevin Bivona

Kevin Bivona is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, sound engineer, and mixer. He began his career as a young teenager when he formed the ska punk band Telacasters with two of his friends in the mid-1990s. By the age of 19, he became the touring keyboardist for the punk rock group “Transplants” on the Vans Warped Tour. He also worked with several other musical acts in different capacities. Among other highlights of his career, Bivona worked alongside on the Grammy-winning Jimmy Cliff album Rebirth (2012).

Justin and Jesse Bivona

Justin Bivona is the bassist of the Interrupters while his twin brother Jesse Bivona is the band’s drummer. Their careers started in 2008 when they both joined their older brother Kevin on the latter’s band Telacasters. Justin and Jesse both also served as touring support members of the rock band Sugar Ray and were eventually recruited as full members of the band in 2010. Their time on the Sugar Ray lineup was rather shortlived as they joined to form the Interrupters shortly afterward.

Facts About The Band

After coming together in 2011, the Interrupters continued touring with other bands even as they began to work on their own songs. They got to perform at the American music festival Riot Fest in Chicago and Denver and also at the Amnesia Rockfest held in Quebec, Canada.

The band eventually released their first two singles ‘Liberty’ and ‘Family’ in the year 2013 with the latter featuring Tim Armstrong. Their eponymous debut studio album The Interrupters was released in August 2014. The album entered the iTunes US Albums chart at No. 85. It’s lead single “Take Back The Power” became very popular as it got featured in major TV commercials as well as TV shows and films.

The interrupters embarked on a tour of North America and Europe in support of their debut album. In the US and Canada, they toured with bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Street Dogs, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Rancid and The English Beat. For the European leg of the tour, they were supported by Bad Religion. The band also performed at Australia’s annual Soundwave Festival as well as the Groezrock music festival in Belgium.

The Interrupters’ second studio album Say It Out Loud was released in June 2016 and it found more success on the music charts. The album entered the iTunes US Albums chart at No. 56 and it peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Heatseekers Album chart, No. 25 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, No. 38 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and No. 22 on the Billboard Vinyl Albums chart.

In promotion of Say It Out Loud, the interrupters played in the age-long Vans Warped Tour in the summer of 2016 and shortly afterward, they embarked on their first headlining tour of the United States bringing along the Los Angeles-based all-female punk band “Bad Cop/Bad Cop” for support. The band continued touring different parts of the world as headliners and also with other bands such as Green Day.

The interrupters ultimately took a break from their touring to put together a new body of music and armed with several years of experience in stage performances, they decided to put out their first live album. Their third album Fight the Good Fight was recorded live to tape and was produced by their longtime collaborator Tim Armstrong. The album was released in May 2018 and its performance on the music charts was much better than their earlier releases.

Fight the Good Fight reached No. 2 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart and No. 141 on the Billboard 200. The album’s lead single “She’s Kerosene” also peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. In addition to their full-length albums, the Interrupters have also released several EPs including Liberty EP (2013), Family EP (2013) and Babylon EP (2015).
