Tom Herman’s Biography

He was born in Cincinnati on June 2, 1975, as Thomas Joseph Herman III but was finally raised in Simi Valley, California by his mom Rita Thiet. According to Tom, his parents divorced when he was just a year old.

He bagged a B.S. in Business Administration from California Lutheran in 1997. He was a cum laude graduate and a  Presidential Scholarship recipient.  At California Lutheran, he was an All-Southern California Athletic Conference wide receiver.

Career

Tom had always played American football both as a High School student and during his time at California Lutheran University (1994-97). In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that Herman ended his career as a player following several injuries he sustained on the pitch as a player.

According to an ESPN.com story, Herman had as much as 13 knee surgeries that doctors at some point had to grow his cartilage in a lab in order to fully repair his joint. As a player, he also underwent four shoulder surgeries.

After retiring from playing, Tom Herman went into coaching and his first job was with Texas Lutheran as a receivers coach. He worked as a graduate assistant under the supervision of Greg Davis. 

After his time at Texas Lutheran as an assistant, he joined Sam Houston State, not as an assistant this time around but a wide receivers coach. His time with the Sam Houston State paid off as he led the Bearkats to two different competitions – the Southland Conference championships and the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

He also coached Jonathon Cooper, who emerged the NCAA Division I-AA Wide Receiver of the Year, he further produced all-conference receivers in each season and a total of three All-American wide receivers.

After four seasons in Houston State, Herman joined Texas State in 2005 as an offensive coordinator. He was with them for two seasons, leading them to Southland Conference. Under him, the team also made its first-ever Division I-AA appearance and were ranked 8th nationally in scoring.

In 2007, he left Texas for Rice, where he served as an offensive coordinator and a quarterback coach. During his time with the team, they were ranked in the Top 10 nationally in passing offence.

Tom Herman also served in Iowa State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after leaving Rice. Like in Rice, Herman brought life to the team, during his stay at Iowa, the team’s offence improved tremendously, the team also broke numerous records.

He has also been with Ohio State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Houston as head coach and Texas as a head coach too. With him as the coach, Texas has recorded a 33–16 win over Missouri in the Texas Bowl, marking their first win since 2013 and their first bowl win since 2012.

In 2015 Herman was named The American Co-Coach of the Year.

Tom’s current basic salary is $5 million per year since he signed a five-year contract as head coach at Texas. With $28.75 million in basic compensation, with a minimum of $25 million guaranteed, the Longhorns’ coach is taking home a grand total of $5.25 million yearly.

He will be collecting $1 million extra if he remains the Longhorns’ coach by December 2019. His other potential bonuses include $100,000 for winning a Big 12 championship and $250,000 for winning a national title.
