Tom Morello: Biography (Age, Ethnicity)

Thomas Baptist Morello was born on the 30th of May, 1964 in Harlem, New York. He is the only child of Ngethe Njoroge, a Kenyan diplomat and Mary Morello, an American activist. He is of mixed ethnicity – his mother is an American with Italian and Irish heritage while his father is a Kikuyu Kenyan.

Tom was solely raised by his mother after his father moved back to his home country, Kenya. While Tom and his mother resided in Libertyville, Illinois, he attended Libertyville High School where his mother taught U.S. History.

While in School, Tom began singing in the school choir and was also a part of the drama club. He moved on to Harvard University where he graduated with a B.A in Social Studies in 1986.

The American musician took to singing at a young age, being the lead singer of a band at the age of 13. Cleary, he already knew what he wanted to do with his life from an early stage.

Family

As previously mentioned, American singer was born to Ngethe Njoroge and Mary Morello. His family background makes Tom Morello of mixed ethnicity – being an American of Italian, Irish and Kenyan descent.

When Tom was 16 months old, Ngethe denied the paternity of his son. His great-uncle, Jomo Kenyatta was the first elected president in Kenyan History.

Career

Tom Morello, whose music is greatly influenced by the works of Run-D.M.C and Jam Master Jay, took interest in playing the guitar when he was 13. In 1991, Morello, together with Zack de la Rocha, Brad Will and Tim Commerford, formed the band Rage Against the Machine. The following year, the band signed a recording contract with Epic Records. They have released four albums with the last album being the edited recordings of their last two concerts. In 2000, the band was later dissolved as Zack de la Rocha went solo and the other three formed Audioslave with . 

In 2003, Tom Morello started a solo project called The Nightwatchman. With his intense interest in politics, he used the music of The Nightwatchman to express his political views which he wasn’t able to do as much as he would have loved to while in Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. He described The Nightwatchman as his political folk alter ego. He sees his music as a reaction against vices and illicit wars. Though he had no intention of recording songs, he released his debut solo album, One Man Revolution on the 24th of April, 2007. By the following year, another album, The Fabled City was released in September with influences from the works of Bob Dylan and Jim Hendricks.

In October 2011, World Wide Rebel Songs was released. But before then, an E.P titled Union Town was released. The proceeds realized from the sales of the E.P were donated to the America Votes Labour Unity Fund.

With renewed vigour, Tom Morello started another band called The Freedom Fighters Orchestra which included Carl Restivo, Eric Springsteen and David Gibbs as members. In 2012, Morello joined Springsteen and E street band on their Australian Wrecking Ball tour. Morello also was a part of Prophets of Rage which was formed in 2016, with friends from Rage Against the Machine. The group has since released an E.P titled The Party Is Over as well as going on various tours.

Besides music, he is also a comic book writer, writing the Orchid for Dark House comic miniseries. He has also written songs to accompany each issue of the series. Presently, Tom Morello is working on a new album titled The Atlas Underground which he announced on July 26th, 2018. The album is scheduled to be released on October 12th, 2018.

Tom Morello is married to Denise Luiso. The pair got married in 2009 and have two sons together – Rhoads who was born in 2007 and Roman who was born in 2011. He also has an older daughter from a previous relationship.

Denise has been described as a ‘behind-the-scenes’ person having worked as a music supervisor in films like Jack Reacher (2012), Perfect Stranger (2007), Across the Universe (2007), Rent (2005) and a few others.

She is also a dedicated mother who is devoted to her family.
