In Week 17, the quarterback suffered an on-field concussion and was taken out, eventually ceding his position back to Osweiler for the remainder of the game.

For the 2017 campaign, Tom had to continually fight for the starting quarterback role with the newly drafted quarterback, . He eventually won the battle when Watson suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury on November 2, 2017. Although Savage suffered another concussion in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers, he went on to record a remarkable personal record of 1,412 yards passed, 5 passing touchdowns and 6 interceptions in eight appearances for his team.
