As of 2018, Tom Savage has the unconventional record of having played for more college teams than NFL outfits. The quarterback’s play time in college was sporadic and it was mostly due to his constantly changing schools.

However, he did do enough to prove his talent and was drafted in 2014 by the Houston Texans. The Pennsylvania native joined the New Orleans Saints in early 2018 after signing a one-year deal with the franchise.

Tom Savage’s Bio

Thomas Benjamin Savage came into the world on April 26, 1990, in Springfield, Pennsylvania. He was also raised in the same town and he attended a local high school, Cardinal O’Hara High School where he started playing football as a quarterback for three of his four academic years at the institution.

Tom’s collegiate career saw him enroll at three different universities. He started with Rutgers University in 2009. He immediately became starting quarterback and recorded 14 touchdowns and 2,211 yards in his first season and was named to the All-American Freshman Team by the FWAA.

Savage soon succumbed to injury in the early weeks of his sophomore season and was replaced by Chas Dodd. He announced his impending transfer away from Rutgers in January 2011 and made it official when he moved to Arizona State University later in the year. He left the college late in the year having never played for them due to NCAA transfer rules.

Tom Savage joined the University of Pittsburgh in 2012 where he had to sit out the season. He was finally given his shot in mid-2013 after he was named starting quarterback and ended the campaign with 2,958 yards passed. He also recorded 21 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He finally rounded off his college education at Pittsburgh with a degree in Communications.

In the 2014 NFL Draft, he was the 135th overall selection by the Houston Texans. He signed a four-year deal with the Texans in May 2014 and was back up to until an injury to the player on December 14 gifted Savage more on-field minutes.

None months later, he sustained a shoulder injury that placed him on injured reserve. This snuffed out all his opportunities for 2015. One of his most memorable games of the 2016 season was when he replaced in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He led his team from a 13-0 deficit to an astonishing 21-20 victory. Tom Savage went on to make the position his own and led the Texans to the AFC South title. In Week 17, the quarterback suffered an on-field concussion and was taken out, eventually ceding his position back to Osweiler for the remainder of the game.

For the 2017 campaign, Tom had to continually fight for the starting quarterback role with the newly drafted quarterback, . He eventually won the battle when Watson suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury on November 2, 2017. Although Savage suffered another concussion in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers, he went on to record a remarkable personal record of 1,412 yards passed, 5 passing touchdowns and 6 interceptions in eight appearances for his team.

This was his last season with the franchise as he joined the New Orleans Saints in a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.

The Saints quarterback was born to Thomas Savage Sr. and Linda Savage. This union also produced another son, an older brother to Tom, Bryan Savage. Bryan also played college football at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Hofstra University. Nothing else is known about his parents except for his father’s occasional mouthing off to the media. During Tom’s unstable college career, Thomas Savage Sr. was reported to have lashed out Greg Schism, Tom’s coach at Rutger’s University, calling him a dictator for refusing his son to the opportunity to speak to the University of Miami who was interested in taking him from Rutgers at the time.

Savage met his wife Catherine Varley back in 2012 while he was at Arizona State University. The pair hit it off and have been together ever since. She followed him when he moved to Pittsburgh and they eventually got married in June 2015. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, on January 18, 2017. They named her Summer Rose Savage.
