Who is Troy Polamalu?

He was born Troy Aumua Polamalu on April 19, 1981, to his parents in Garden Grove, California. It took a short holiday for the player to fall in love with the environs of Oregon where he would eventually have his education. He attended Douglas High School in Oregon and was a part of the football team. His impressive skills accompanied him to the Tacoma Western News Tribune Western 100, the Super Prep All-Northwestern team, and All-Far West League second team despite an injury. After making a name for himself in high school, he proceeded to the University of California on an athletic scholarship and exhibited his skills for the USC Trojans football team.

Polamalu’s impact was felt more on the team from his second year till his exit from the school. He was made the captain of the team in his junior season and led them to victory on many occasions. By the end of his senior season at the team, he had clinched 278 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss, 6 interceptions, 4 blocked punts, and 3 touchdowns.

Troy sustained an injury which caused him to miss some games including the Senior Bowl and NFL combine in March 2003. Nevertheless, he was still ranked as one of the strongest safety prospects by National Scouting Combines and BLESTO. Polamalu was selected by Pittsburgh Steelers as the 16th overall pick at the first round, in the 2003 NFL Draft. He was subsequently signed on July 28, 2003, on a $12 million five-year contract at the team. Making his professional debut with a 34-15 season-opening victory against Baltimore Ravens, Troy, who was the backup safety went on to finish up the rookie season with 38 combined tackles.

The following year (2004), the Steelers named him to the 2005 Pro Bowl after he ended the second season with 96 combined tackles, ten pass deflections, five interceptions, and one touchdown in 16 games and 16 starts. Troy, who was becoming more or less indispensable on the team had his contract extended for four years at $30.29 million on July 23, 2007, with a guarantee of $15.37 million, making him the highest paid safety in the league. However, he lost that title on December 27 that same year when NFL safety Bob Sanders clinched a 5-year contract of $37.5 million with a guarantee of $20 million.

In 2008, he was voted by experts as the AFC’s strong safety and was named to the 2009 Pro Bowl. Troy, out of 296 active players in the NFL, was ranked the 9th dirtiest player in 2010 in a Sports Illustrated survey. His contract was extended yet again in 2011 to four years and he continued to set record standards at the team. Polamalu retired in April 2015 to focus on his family.
