It cannot be argued that Tyler Joseph definitely worked and earned his way to the top. He is a producer, songwriter, singer, rapper and multi-instrumentalist. Starting in 2009 with a few friends and nothing but personal determination and grind, his duo music group Twenty One Pilots has become one of the most loved music groups today.
Twenty one Pilots have released numerous albums, with their most recognised songs, Stressed Out and Heathen nominated for numerous Grammy Awards.
Biography
Tyler was born on December 1, 1988, to Christopher Anthony Joseph and Kelly Joseph in Columbus, Ohio. He had two brothers growing up – Zach Phillip Joseph who is also a singer and Jay Thomas Joseph. He also had a sister, Madison Grace Bett. He was home-schooled during his pre-high school days.
Tyler may have taken the route of athletics given his early inspirations and his parent’s occupations. Both Mom and Dad were basketball coaches at Olentangy Orange High School and Worthington Christian High School respectively. They were also math teacher and principal respectively too.
As is expected, he played point guard in his high school days for Worthington Christian High’s basketball team and even placed second in the 2008 Division IV state tournament. He was offered a basketball scholarship from Otterbein University, but he turned it down as he had been inspired towards music after watching a songwriter do some songs at a High Street Club.
Tyler started teaching himself to play the keyboard by mimicking radio melodies using an old keyboard his mom had bought for him as a Christmas present. In his senior high school year, Tyler recorded and released a debut project title No Phun Intended which he put up for free listening on his PureVolume account.
The inspiration for Twenty One Pilots came when Tyler was studying All My Sons, a play written by Authur Miller. It was about a man who had knowingly caused the death of twenty-one pilots during WWII by selling them faulty parts to be able to save his business.
Professional Music Career
The band was born in 2009. He co-opted his friends from high school, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih. Their debut album was born on December 29 of the same year and they began touring for it. By the second album, Regional at Best, there were only two original members left: Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun. They went on to release Vessel in 2013 and Blurryface in 2015, also embarking on three tours in total for the two releases.
They won a Grammy in 2017 for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song Stressed Out off their fourth studio album. The same album also peaked at the No.1 spot on the US Alternative, US Rock Chart and Billboard 200.
Tyler Joseph grew up in a Christian home and speaks clearly about his faith and how it inspires the lyrics he writes. He was featured in Joseph Micheal Langston’s (known as Jocef) song Live, off his album In Search Of: L.O.V.E. Jocef returned the favour in 2011 when he featured on the song Be Concerned of Twenty One Pilot’s second album Regional at Best.
Tyler also participated in a comedic documentary from Five14 Church. The three episode documentary was titled The (moderately inspiring tale of the) Longboard Rodeo Tango. In 2013, he participated in the Church’s Christmas Eve event, Christmas With The Stars, in New Albany in Ohio. He has also penned some songs for the Five14 Church’s gospel band, Whittaker. In December 2014, he provided backup vocals for Dallon Weekes’ song, Sickly Sweet Holidays.
Tyler Joseph’s Relationship With Jenner Black – Wife
Tyler and Jenna Black dated for a while before they got married. He said in an interview with Rolling Stone, that there is nothing great about their story and how they met. However, he added that he is excited getting to know her better every day. They got engaged on July 18th, 2014 and got married seven months later, on March 28th, 2015. They have a baby daughter.
Tattoos
The Twenty One Pilots lead singer doesn’t talk much about his tattoos. He says he does not want their meanings to be misconstrued as things usually are once they hit the internet.
He does admit, however, to having a three-part tattoo that is representative of ‘something that saved his life’. It is believed that the meaning of this phrase has religious connotations that lead back to his Christian faith.
He and Josh Dun also have an “X” tattoo. Tyler’s is on his right bicep and Josh’s is on his neck. These were gotten to show their dedication to fans from their hometown in Columbus, Ohio. They got the matching tattoos on stage during their Lifestyle Communities Pavillion show in Columbus in 2013.
