Vijay Singh Biography

Vijay Singh was born on February 22, 1963, in Lautoka, Fiji, to a father who although was an aeroplane technician, also found the time to teach Golf. He was raised by his parents; Mohan (father) and mother (Parwati). It was alongside his other siblings, Krishna Mira and Anita that they were brought up by their parents in a family that was financially disadvantaged.

Because he is of Hindu descent, Vijay and his family experienced much prejudice as a child. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop him from using anything possible to play golf which his father went on to teach him using an old abandoned course very close to the airport where he worked. That didn’t mean the two were close as he grew up very close to his mother than his disciplinarian father.

Even though Vijay Singh also had a love for other sports such as football, rugby, and snooker, it was golf that pulled him more. By his early teens, the man who would grow to rule the world of Golf had started entering local tournaments winning a good number and more importantly, building his talent and confidence.

By the time Singh had hit 16, he decided to go with golfing rather than schooling and this broke the heart of his parents who were counting on him to complete his education and help the struggling family. Without making much after 3 years, the golfer decided it was time to leave for Australia and pursue his career in the proper way. He didn’t find it easy in Australia where he faced poverty and racism.

Years to come met the man failing again and again and moving from place to place while he worked with different golf clubs and even once as a bouncer. Although there was a lot of debt piling up on him, he still didn’t give up until it all paid in 1992 when he became a name to reckon with having won two tournaments in Europe, another in Asia, and various others including the 1988 Nigerian Open which was his first victory as a pro – he became the first man of colour to win the event making fans very excited.

From then on, his career took a rather great path and in the coming years he would go on to record 34 PGA Tour victories, 13 European tour wins, and 5 Asian tours. He also has 2 PGA Tour Champions, as well as many other tournaments.

Having had a very successful career, he was ranked No 1 in the sports in 2004 and 2005. He remained in the Number 1 rank of the Official World Golf Ranking for as much as 32 weeks. More so, he has many awards to his name including the Byron Nelson Award, European Tour Player of the Year, and the PGA Player of the Year all in 2004.
