Vincent Kompany is possibly the only professional footballer in the world to have gotten an MBA while still playing at the highest level of the game.

The Belgian international skipper, who also captains his club side Manchester City, has been described as erudite and eloquent in contrast to his football peers. It is no surprise then that in his first year as captain of his club, Manchester City got crowned as Premier League champions for the first time in 44 years.

Biography

Vincent Kompany was born Vincent Jean Mpoy Kompany on the 10th of April 1986 in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium, to Pierre and Jocelyne Fraselle Kompany. His father Pierre is a Congolese immigrant to Belgium who currently works as his son’s agent while his mother Jocelyne, worked as an employment agent before she passed away.

Kompany and his siblings; older sister Christel and younger brother Francois, all grew up in Brussels. Having come from a low-income family, Kompany’s dad made sure to invest in his child’s footballing skills in order for him to have a better life as an adult.

As a schoolboy, Kompany was already getting the attention of the big clubs in Belgium who wanted him in their youth set up. He, however, suffered a lot of racial abuse because he was the child of an immigrant. The abuse, in turn, led to him building a reputation of being violent as he would fight and beat up any other kid that would racially abuse him. One of such outbursts led to him losing his place in the Belgium youth team.

Professional Football Career

Vincent Kompany began his professional career at first division Belgium side, Anderlecht at the young age of 17. With Anderlecht, Kompany was awarded the Belgian Golden Shoe and the Belgian Ebony Shoe. The former is an award given to the best footballer of the Belgian First Division at the beginning of each civil year while the latter is also an annual award given to the best African or player of African origin in the Belgian Pro League.

Despite interest from all across Europe, Kompany stayed in Belgium for three years to complete his development. In 2006, he joined German Bundesliga club Hamburg for a fee of 10 million Euros. In Germany, Kompany somewhat struggled to make it into the first team. It also did not help that he suffered a number of long-term injuries.

After two years with Hamburg, Kompany moved to Manchester City for an undisclosed fee. In his early days with the club, he was deployed as a holding midfielder before he was later able to cement himself as a strong central defender with excellent aerial ability and mobility.

In the 2010 -11 season, Kompany’s performances did not go unnoticed as he was named Supporter’s Player of the Year and Player’s Player of the Year for the club. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year. That same year, he won the FA Cup which was his first trophy with the club and the club’s first major honor in 35 years. The club also qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

The following season, Kompany was named club captain and he guided his team to their first Premier League title since 1968. He has gone ahead to feature for the Citizens more than 300 times, scoring 19 goals and winning eight trophies which include the Premier League on three occasions.
