Who Is Wesley Johnson?

Wesley Johnson was born on the 11th of July 1987 in Corsicana, Texas. The sportsman had always been interested in the game from a very young age and joined his school’s basketball team while studying at Corsicana High School. He became an important player in the school’s team and was a first-time-all-district pick from 2004 to 2005 in his senior year. He was also selected to represent The Dallas Mustangs of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)

Before he became an NBA player, he had a two-year spell of college basketball at Iowa State University of Science and Technology but later joined Syracuse University where he continued playing.

When he joined the Iowa State University (2006-2007), Wesley Johnson was included as a freshman in the Big 12 All-Rookie team. He was popular among his teammates for scoring 13 rebounds and 14 points in the game against the Missouri which includes the epic point he scored with just 1.6 seconds left.

From 2007 to 2008, Wesley had to miss five games and later had no choice but to play with an injured ankle all through the season.

In 2009, he transferred to Syracuse University where he played for the Syracuse Orange. His decision was made following the 2008 season but according to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) transfer rules, he had to sit out the 2008-2009 season, giving him two years of college eligibility.

As expected, he excelled on the Orange team and was named the “Most Valuable Player”, a title he earned after scoring points for his team against The North Carolina Tar Heels, Florida and Seton Hall.

Wesley Johnson continued to receive more accolades and on the 9th of March 2010, he was named Big East Player of the Year as he secured an impressive season average of 8.4 rebounds and 16.0 points. Twenty days later, he was included in the All-American team consisting of the best amateur players.

In April 2010, the star athlete decided to hire popular sports agent, Rob Pelinka and declare himself eligible to play in the National Basketball Association.

Wesley’s parents are Mary and Robert Johnson. He also has two siblings, a brother named Ronald Craig Carroll and a sister – Rhonda Smith. Wesley is very close to his siblings and shares a deep connection with them.

NBA Career

His professional basketball career began when he was drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 4th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. Wes scored an average of 15 points per game when he played for the Timberwolves.

He was later transferred to The Phoenix Suns in July 27th 2012 on a three-team deal. He secured wins for the Suns against Detroit Pistons, his former team Minnesota Timberwolves in February 2013, the San Antonio Spurs and the Atlantic Hawks.

In 2013, Wes left the Suns and signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers which was later extended by an additional year. While playing for the Lakers, he was so impressive in the court that he became one of the eight players to average 1 steal and 1 block in each game in his first season.

He played the Detroit Pistons on November 29, 2013, and helped his team win with 27 points, 3 blocks and 6 rebounds. Leaving the Lakers, Wesley Johnson got another contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. He played for the team’s season opener on October 28 and securing a win against the Sacramento Kings with 3 points and 1 steal.

His contract was extended with the Clippers on July 8, 2016, by three years and was said to be worth 18 million dollars.
