There was a time when angst rock was a thing for men. They were the ones unafraid to use it in opening their souls and laying their indignation for anyone who cared to listen. And then came the 1990s with women like Melissa Etheridge, , and the woman who has been described as the Queen of Alt-Rock Angst, Alanis Morissette.

Morissette is a Canadian singer, record producer, and actress who has become very famous for the strength and emotion she provokes with her music. She started her career in the early 1990s and has since then grown to become a massive force in the alternative rock genre, thanks to albums such as Jagged Little Pill which has sold more than 33 million copies globally.

Alanis Morissette Biography

The Canadian singer was born Alanis Nadine Morissette on June 1, 1974, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Of Irish, French, and Hungarian descent, she was brought up by her parents, Alan Richard Morissette who was a French teacher and Georgia Mary Ann who was also a teacher and a high school principal.

Alanis has two siblings, Wade Imre Morissette who is her twin brother and Chad Morissette, the oldest. Just like his twin, Wade is also a musician while Chad is an entrepreneur.

Because her parents worked with the military, Alanis spent her childhood travelling to different places including West Germany where she lived for three years. By the time she was 6, her family had moved back to Ottawa and that was when she began learning to play the piano. A year later, in 1981, she took dance classes.

Raised a Catholic, she got her elementary education from the Holy Family Catholic School and then she moved to Immaculata High School. Next, she went to Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa where she completed her high school.

Even before she began her musical career, she appeared on the Canadian television program You Can’t Do That on Television before she went to junior high school.

In 1987, Alanis released her first demo, Fate Stay with Me followed by her debut album, Alanis in 1991. Her next album, Now Is the Time came in 1992, followed by Jagged Little Pill in 1995. The album sold 33 million copies worldwide – the biggest-selling album by a female artist only after Come On Over that sold more than 40 million.

Her subsequent albums are Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998), Under Rug Swept (2002), So-Called Chaos (2004), Flavors of Entanglement (2008), and Havoc and Bright Lights (2012).

Who Is Her Husband?

Morissette has been in a number of relationships in the past before she finally met and got married to her husband, Mario Treadway, who is also known by his stage name Souleye. In the early 1990s, she got into a relationship with actor and comedian Dave Coulier. The relationship did not last long before it came to an end. Many believe it was for Coulier that she sang You Oughta Know which became the rage song for all broken women. More than 20 years since the song was released, the legend still holds on even though the singer has maintained her silence.

The next person she got into a relationship with was yet another actor and comedian, whom she met in 2002. In 2004, the two announced their engagement which was then called off three years later. It was following her grief over the relationship that she released her seventh studio album, Flavors of Entanglement in 2007 with the hit Torch specifically for the actor.

In 2009, she began her relationship with her now-husband, Souleye who is 6 years younger than her. By 2010, the alternative rock star and the rapper were married in a private ceremony at their Los Angeles home.

The union is blessed with two children, Ever Imre Morissette-Treadway who was born in 2010 and Onyx Solace Morissette-Treadway born in 2016.
