Back in 2015, the phenomenon known as Calysta Bevier captured the hearts of the American public. The youngster had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and channeled her raw feelings towards making a cover of Rachel Platten’s inspirational track, Fight Song. Bevier’s incredible voice, as well as her touching background story, made the cover a viral sensation and she became a star overnight. She was featured on several TV shows and also got to compete on America‘s Got Talent.
So, where is Bevier now? What has she been up to since that incredible 2015? All these and more questions are answered below.
Who is Calysta Bevier?
Calysta Bevier was born on the 17th of September 1999 in Bowling Green, Northwest Ohio. She hails from a family of six, comprising of her father, Adam (a firefighter), her mother, Missy Mason, as well as three younger siblings – LaVaya, Adam, and Gavin. Bevier grew up in Ohio and started singing from an early age. She performed at family gatherings, as well as small talent shows. She, however, never dreamt of making it big as there was a dearth of opportunities in her small town. The young lady thus concentrated her energy on her studies at Otsego High School. She not only performed well in her academics but also excelled in sporting activities such as volleyball and cheerleading.
Her Rise to Stardom
Bevier’s journey to fame is ironically tied to her cancer diagnosis. Back in mid-2013, she detected a small lump in her abdomen area. She thought nothing of it and the lump increased to the size of a softball by June 2015. Her parents immediately took her to the hospital and she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Upon learning of her diagnosis, Bevier was predictably distraught, sad and despondent. She, however, picked herself up after her dad advised her to maintain a happy and positive outlook.
While heading to her very first chemotherapy treatment, Calysta Bevier came across Rachel Platten’s inspiring track, Fight Song. The lyrics of the song resonated with her and she decided to make it her personal battle anthem. Bevier kept listening to the song throughout her treatments. Her cancer later went into remission and she used this opportunity to perform the track at a benefit for another cancer sufferer. Her father subsequently uploaded a video of her awesome performance on YouTube on the 29th of September 2015.
The video went viral and famed comic/ talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres, posted it on her own Facebook page. She also invited Bevier to her show and the young lady got to perform the song with none other than Rachel Platten herself. Bevier’s good fortune did not stop at this juncture. She equally received an invite to compete at the 2016 edition of America’s Got Talent. The Ohio native gave a stirring rendition of Fight Song during her audition and received a golden buzzer from Simon Cowell himself. She eventually made it to the semi-final stages before taking a bow.
Where is Calysta Bevier now, and what is she up to?
Bevier is currently based in California. She moved out there in 2016 to pursue her music career on a full-time basis. The Ohio native has thus far dropped several singles, including the inspirational Head Held High. She has also shared the stage with big names such as multiple Grammy winner, John Legend, accomplished crooner, T-Pain, and famous comedian/actor, Kevin Hart.
Calysta Bevier has also become a prominent and vocal activist on cancer-related issues. The young lady once declared that she would always fight for cancer survivors and sufferers, even if nothing comes of her music career. She has so far kept this promise. Bevier has performed at various benefits for several non-profit organizations, including the Tina Wish Foundation.
She also headlined the Crucial Catch Initiative in October 2019. The initiative is aimed at honoring cancer survivors and is a brainchild of NFL franchise, the Minnesota Vikings. Bevier also has her own foundation known as the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation. They provide toys for children suffering from cancer.
The singer has also found love. Bevier identifies as pansexual and is dating a transgender man named Sam. The singer promoted this fact in the video for her 2019 single, Hate U Sometimes.
