At the time of the event, Casey, who was born on the 19th of March 1986, was living with her two and a half years old daughter named Caylee Marie Anthony at her parent’s house in Florida.

After Casey left the house on the 16th of June, 2008 with her daughter, Caylee, she did not return to the house with the child. She was reported to the police for killing her daughter and disposing of her body.

Why did they come to this assumption? Her father, George had gone to the post office to pick up a mail and found his daughter’s car in a nearby tow yard.

Since it was the same vehicle with which she had left the house thirty-one days earlier, a surprised George tried to take the car back home and then to his utter surprise, realized that the car had a thick stench of a decomposing body.

On searching the car further, he discovered that there was a bag of trash in the trunk of the car.

George reported his findings to his wife upon getting home and she placed a call to the Orange County police department that same day which was July 15, exactly 31 days since Casey left the house with her daughter, Caylee.

The major reason for suspicion was the fact that prior to this discovery, Casey had been evasive about giving Cindy details of the whereabouts of her granddaughter, Caylee Anthony.

When called and asked to give the phone to Caylee so her grandmother could speak with her, Casey would become evasive and claimed on several occasions that Caylee was not around and had gone to the park.

When Cindy asked to visit them, Casey also found excuses, claiming she was busy and wouldn’t be around. All these formed the basis of her parents’ suspicion.

The police questioned Casey and she claimed her daughter had been kidnapped two weeks earlier by her maid, whose name she gave as Zanny with the full name being Zenaida  Fernandez-Gonzalez.

Also, she claimed that she was too afraid to inform law enforcement agencies. But upon investigation, it was found that she never had a maid by that name.

And, even though there is someone bearing the name, her path had never crossed with Casey’s or that of any member of her family.

Months later, Caylee’s remains, which were just her skeletal system, were found around George and Cindy’s house; duct tape was also found around her mouth.

Following the discovery, a trial ensued and Casey was prosecuted for the murder of her child. The prosecuting bench claimed that she must have intentionally killed her daughter in order to escape the responsibility of parenting and as such, they demanded the death penalty for Casey.

Their argument seemed to hold sway owing to the lies she had told when she was initially questioned about the whereabouts of Caylee. In her defense, she claimed that her father had gotten rid of Caylee’s body after she accidentally drowned in the family’s swimming pool.

But then, there was no evidence to back up this claim. However, in July 2011, the jury gave a ‘not guilty verdict for murder but found her guilty of trying to detract an investigation by lying to the police in the line of their duty.
