According to reports, Dame Barbara Windsor has since 2018 been suffering from symptoms of memory loss and confusion, as her husband revealed that she sometimes forgets that they are married. Regardless of her poor health condition, the world is nowhere near forgetting her work and achievements which include a BAFTA and Tony Award nomination.
The British actress made a name for herself back in the 60s and 70s in the Carry On film series and most recently in the BBC One soap opera EastEnders. She is also known for her appearances in A Study in Terror (1965) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).
Bio, Age
Barbara Windsor was born Barbara Ann Deeks, the only child of Rose (née Ellis) and John Deeks, on the 6th of August 1937 in Shoreditch, London. She attended Our Lady’s Convent in Stamford Hill and then the drama, dance, and education school, Aida Foster School in Golders Green, Barnet.
Windsor proved to be a very talented performer from a young age as she was able to make her stage debut at the age of 13. Two years later, she featured at the West End theatres in the chorus of the musical Love From Judy. It was also around this time that she opted to change her surname from Deeks to Windsor. In 1954, she landed her first film role in The Belles of St Trinian’s as she further built her reputation as a stage performer. She received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1965 thanks to her performance in the Theatre Workshop’s Oh, What a Lovely War! on Broadway. Two years before that, she had also received a BAFTA nomination for Best British Film Actress for her role in Sparrers Can’t Sing (1963).
Barbara Windsor achieved huge fame when she began portraying the characters of a ‘good time girl’ in the Carry On films series; Carry On Spying (1964), Carry On Camping (1969), Carry On Again Doctor (1969), and Carry On Girls (1973), among others. In recent years, Windsor was able to rejuvenate her career thanks to her role of Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders.
Barbara Windsor’s Net Worth
According to the Celebrity Net Worth website, Barbara Windsor is said to have an estimated net worth of £10 million. The 1999 Best Actress winner at the British Soap Awards, who was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2000 New Year Honours and then a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to charity and entertainment, was able to make bank thanks to her long career as a film and theatre actress.
It was reported in the mid-1990s that Windsor found herself to be in huge debt thanks to a failed business deal with her then-husband Stephen Hollings. The pair had bought the 14th-century Plough Inn at Amersham in Buckinghamshire to run but soon found themselves to be in above their heads as the business and their relationship crumbled. But thanks to her strong work ethic, she was able to land a few roles in movies like Alice in Wonderland (2010) and Babs (2017) and also tour the UK with a one-woman music hall show to build back her net worth.
Husband or Spouse
Barbara Windsor is in her third marriage. Her current husband is a former actor and recruitment consultant, Scott Mitchell, who is also said to be the son of one of the legendary actress’ friends. The pair got married on the 8th of April, 2000, eight years after they reportedly first met each other in 1992. Due to the 27 years age difference between the pair, numerous reports have labeled Mitchell as a gold digger. Time has since proven all those stories to be false as he has stood by Windsor’s side all through the years, most significantly in recent times when she began suffering from Alzheimer’s.
Before Mitchell, Windsor was married to chef and restauranteur, Stephen Hollings, who was 18 years her junior. The pair were married from 1986 to 1995 when they divorced. Prior to Hollings, she was in a 22-year marriage to nightclub owner and convicted criminal, Ronnie Knight.
Windsor has no children from any of her marriages. In her autobiography, she revealed that she got pregnant five times but went ahead to abort all of them because she did not want any children. She attributed her father’s rejection of her following her parents’ divorce as the reason for this.
