Buddy Hield is a professional basketball player of Bahamian origin who plies his trade with NBA side, Sacramento Kings. His pro career dates back to 2016 when he was drafted by the New Orlean Pelicans. The talented player joined the Kings in February 2016 midway through his rookie season with the Pelicans.

Buddy Hield was born Chavano Rainier Hield on December 17, 1993, in Eight Mile Rock, a coastal community in the West Grand Bahama district of The Bahamas. He was nicknamed ‘Buddy’ by his mother after the Bud Bundy character of the hit 90s sitcom Married… with Children. He showed an exceptional talent for the game of basketball from an early age and by 8th grade, he was rated as the best player of his class in the Bahamas and also featured by The All Bahamian Brand, an international basketball magazine.

As a member of the Jack Hayward High School basketball team, Hield led the school to win the Providence Holiday Basketball Classic and the Grand Bahamas High School Championships, a performance which earned him an All Bahamian Brand All Bahamian Selection.

Afterward, he was recruited by coach Kyle Lindsted to Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas where he spent the last 2 years of his high school career. He led the school to clinch the 2011 National Association of Christian Athletes national championship in his junior year and was named the MVP of the tournament. He was the toast of several college recruiters by the time he was a high school senior. He eventually settled for the University of Oklahoma for his college basketball career.

Buddy Hield’s college career with the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team was nothing short of exceptional right from the very start. He scored 7.8 points per game during his freshman season, a performance which earned him the team’s Most Inspirational Award.

His scoring average upped to 16.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game as a sophomore which earned him a second-team All-Big 12 selection. The talented youngster also received a First Team All-Big 12 selection and was named Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in his junior season during which he averaged 17.4 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Hield returned for his senior season though he had a good prospect of getting picked in the 2015 NBA draft. He trumped all his previous season’s records finishing with career-highs of 25.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He was named the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year for the second time and also won the John R. Wooden Award as the most outstanding men’s college basketball player.

NBA Career

Buddy Hield was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans as the 6th overall pick 2016 NBA draft. He featured in 5 games with the team at the 2016 Summer League finishing with scoring averages of 16.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He started 37 out of 57 total appearances with the Pelicans in the 2016-17 NBA regular season averaging 8.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.

However, he was traded midseason in February 2017 to the Sacramento Kings, alongside Tyreke Evans, Langston Galloway and 2017 first and second-round draft picks in exchange for DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi. The talented player blended easily with the team as he finished the remainder of the season with career-highs of 15.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game and was eventually named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

The 2017-18 season was Hield’s first full season with the Sacramento Kings and he had 13 starts in 80 total appearances finishing the season with an average of 13.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Buddy Hield’s parents are Jackie Swann and Vincent Hield. The fifth of his mother’s seven children, he was raised in a large household alongside 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Growing up wasn’t all rosy for the NBA star as his family passed through some really rough times. Following his parents’ divorce when he was 11 years of age, Hield, his mother and siblings all moved into their grandmother’s apartment where all 8 of them had to make do with just one room. His mother worked several jobs to keep up with the demands of the family. She has married again to a man named Richard Bryanen who became the stepfather and role model that her talented son needed.
