So many may see David Nwaba as a newbie in the game but the popular basketball player has been of a huge significance since he went pro in 2016. Nwaba joined the prestigious National Basketball Association in 2016 when he was traded to the Los Angeles D-fenders by NBA Development League’s Reno Bighorns.

Basketball has been the life of the talented player even from a very young age and he has never hesitated to prove himself in the highly competitive game. Who Is David Nwaba – The Nigerian American Basketball Player?

David was born in Los Angeles, California in 1993. He attended University High School in Los Angeles and played in the school’s basketball team. During his high school years, he earned the Western League Most Valuable Player honouree two times and was also an all-league first team selection. His senior year in high school ended with an average of 22.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. After a successful high school career, Nwaba proceeded to Hawaii Pacific but was redshirted in the 2011-12 season. He then moved to Santa Monica College that year and soon earned the Western State Conference South Division Player of the year title.

Nwaba transferred to Calpoly in 2013 and participated in the 2013-14 season. He made 30 starts in 34 games and came out eight among Big West Conference players. After recording 14.0 points and shooting 72.7 percent from the floor in three contests, he made his way to the Big West All-Tournament Team. At the end of his senior year, he recorded an average of 12.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, 3.5 assists in all 30 games.

After a successful college career, Nwaba opted to join Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League who traded him to the Los Angeles D-Fenders in October 2016 after acquiring his rights. After a brief stint with the D-Fenders, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2017 on a 10-day contract. Nwaba signed another 10-day contract with the team in March that same year and made his first start with six scoring points in the game against Philadelphia 76ers.

His third deal with the Lakers was a multi-year contract signed on March 21, 2017, but he was occasionally sent back to the D-Fenders during his rookie season. Shortly after his second 10-day contract with the Lakers, he recorded six points in the team’s 118-116 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

However, after a few months with the Lakers, Nwaba was waived on July 17 by the team and was claimed by the Chicago Bulls almost immediately. His uncommon ability to contest shots earned him lots of commendation from the Bulls as well as his other counterparts in the game.

David’s next move was in September 2018 to the Cleveland Cavaliers where he signed a one-year $1.5 million contract.

David Nwaba was born to his Nigerian parents; Theodore and Blessing Nwaba. Though of American nationality, he is of Igbo ancestry. He has five other siblings; two brothers Victor Nwaba and Alex Nwaba, and 3 sisters Jane, Precious, and Barbara Nwaba. David is not alone in the world of sports, his sister Barbara is a heptathlete notable for winning several championships. She is the oldest of the Nwaba siblings and is also an alumnus of University High School.
