Dejan Lovren is a professional footballer from the Eastern European country, Croatia who plays for the country’s national football team, as well as for English Premier League club, Liverpool as a center back.

Before signing a four-year contract with Liverpool in 2014, Lovren played for Dinamo Zagreb, Olympique Lyonnais, and Southampton. He has been playing for the Croatian national team since August 2009 and has so far made 30 appearances and scored two goals. He was part of the squad that represented the country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A Brief Bio

Dejan was born in the city of Zenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina (formally SFR Yugoslavia) on the 5th of July 1989 to Croatian parents, Silva and Sasa Lovren. His parents left  Yugoslavia for Munich in 1992 due to the Bosnian War. Lovren was only three years old then. The family lived in the German city of Munich for the next seven years before moving back to Croatia, where they settled in the Croatian city of Karlovac.

Back in Croatia, Lovren who was about ten years old at this time initially found it difficult adjusting to life in his home country and coping academically as he found it a little hard understanding the Croatian language, but he soon adjusted. Recalling his years in Germany, Lovren says he was a happy boy, poke German perfectly well, went to school, and played for a little club.

Lovren has a younger brother, Davor, who also plays professional football. He is currently on loan to German club Fortuna Düsseldorf from Dinamo Zagreb.

Career

Before he began his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb in 2004, Dejan Lovren played for two local clubs; NK Ilovac and NK Karlovac. He made his appearance for Zagreb in May 2006 in a match against NK Varteks Varaždin in the Croatian First Football League.

In July of the same year, he was loaned to NK Inter Zaprešić for two seasons. At NK Inter Zaprešić, he appeared in 50 league matches scoring one goal. At the expiration of his loan, Lovren returned to Dinamo, appearing in 38 matches all through the 2008–09 season and scoring three goals. The next season, he played in all of Dinamo’s four UEFA Champions League qualifiers matches which were against Pyunik Yerevan and Red Bull Salzburg. He scored a header in the match against Pyunik.

In 2010, Dejan signed a four-and-half-year contract with French Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais. The contract was worth €8 million plus €1.5 million in incentives. His first appearance for his new club was in January 2010 against AS Monaco in a Coupe de France match that ended in a 2-1 defeat.

His Ligue 1 debut was also in the same month in a match against PSG that ended in a 2-1 win. In the two debut matches, Dejan Lovren played for 90 minutes. He made a total of 10 appearances during the second half of the season, appearing mostly as a substitute. He was not also featured in the UEFA Champions League that season because he had already played in the championship for Dinamo Zagreb.

Following the departure of Jean-Alain Boumsong and Mathieu (both defenders) in the 2010/2011 season, Lovren’s playing time increased, he soon established himself as the team’s regular starter. He also demonstrated himself as a versatile defender playing right or left full-back. By the end of 2010, a Spanish weekly sports magazine Don Balón listed him as one of the 100 best young players in the world.

In January 2012, Dejan Lovren extended his contract with Olympique Lyonnais, to stay in France until 2016 but he, unfortunately, left Lyon for Southampton the following year on a four-year contract believed to be worth £8.5 million. At the end of his first season, his name appeared in Bloomberg Sports’ Power 50 list, he was also named the fifth-highest ranked player from the Premier League, coming in the 31st position.

In July 2014, he left Southampton to join Liverpool, becoming the third player from Southampton to join Liverpool in that transfer window, after Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert. He has remained with Liverpool till date and in April 2017, Lovren signed a contract extension his contract with that will keep him at Liverpool, until 2021.

Dejan Lovren has been married to Anita Lovren since 2013. The couple has been together since Dejan was sixteen and after being together for about eight years, they decided to tie the knots in 2013.

However, in 2015, Anita cheated on Dejan with her old friend, Dario Torbic, who she ran into while on a visit to their home city of Zagreb. After she returned to England, she convinced Dario to come over to England and they got together again.

When Lovren eventually found out, he felt really embarrassed and hurt, but because he was committed to saving his marriage and not leaving his love of over a decade, he forgave, despite Anita seeking for a divorce.

They eventually resolved their issues and are still together. Lovren and Anita are proud parents of two adorable kids – Elena and Josip.
