Derrick Henry is an American football running back, best known for his unparallel running skills. He is currently playing for the Tennessee Titans of the NFL. He completed his college career with the Alabama Crimson Tide and his high school career with the Yulee Hornets football team before he was drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft as the 45th overall selection.

Born Derrick Lamar Henry Jr to African American parents, Derrick Henry Sr. and his wife Stacy Veal on January 4, 1994, Henry grew up with his late grandma, Gladys and grandpa, Benjamin (who had their 14 children of their own) in Yulee, Nassau County, Florida. During high school, Derrick moved in with his aunt Latrease and later on, his middle school football coach, J. T. Medley. Medley was more than a coach, he was a mentor and he helped Henry through high school and college.

Derrick attended Yulee High School where he kicked off his football career. He was also active in other sports such as basketball and track events. Playing the position of a running back for his school team, Henry had 26 touchdowns covering 2,465 yards in his freshman year. The following year, he recorded 38 touchdowns with 2,788 rushing yards.

At the end of his high school career, he had a record of 153 touchdowns and 12,124 rushing yards. He was selected to the East team that played in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He won Florida’s Mr. Football Award and was named to high school All-American team by USA Today. In addition, Henry was rated five-star by ESPN and was named No 1 Athlete in the nation in 2013.

Upon graduation, Henry went on to attend the University of Alabama where he played college football from 2013 to 2015. He graduated in May 2018 with a degree in communications. As a freshman in college, Derrick recorded three rushing touchdowns and 382 rushing yards. Based on his consistency he was named “El Tractorcito” meaning ‘The Little Tractor’ by the Spanish sportscaster, Pablo Viruega. He also led his team to the 2014 Sugar Bowl where he registered eight carries, a touchdown, and 100 rushing yards. In his sophomore year, the star continued to improve in his game; he finished the 2014 season with a total of 11 touchdowns, 172 carries, and 990 rushing yards.

During his junior year, Henry had 28 touchdowns, 395 carries, and 2,219 rushing yards. he led Alabama to victory in the Cotton Bowl as well Iron Bowl, and the 2016 College Football National Championship. He beats Deshaun Watson and Christian McCaffrey to win the Heisman Trophy. He also received other awards including the Doak Walker Award, Maxwell Award, and Walter Camp Award. Henry forwent his senior season so he could join the NFL Draft in 2016.

Derrick Henry was selected by the Tennessee Titans as the 45th overall pick in the NFL draft of 2016. He was the second running back to selected in the draft. Joining the Titans, Henry signed a four-year contract worth $5.40 million including a signing bonus of $2.13 million.

In his rookie season, Henry became a backup running back to DeMarco Murray. He finished his the 2016 season with a record of 15 games, 5 touchdowns, 110 carries, and 490 rushing yards. The following year, he featured in 15 games notching 5 touchdowns, 176 carries, and 744 yards. During the 2017 postseason, he had a touchdown, 35 carries and 184 rushing yards for the Titans.
