It was on November 16, 1964, that the singer was born as Diana Jean Krall in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. Diana was raised with her sister Michelle who once worked with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). While her father, James “Jim” Krall was an accountant, her mother, Adella was a school teacher.

Diana Krall’s interest in music began since she was just a little girl thanks to the influence of her parents who were both music lovers. While her father would play the piano at home, her mother was a part of the community choir. By the time she was 4 years old, Krall had already started taking classical piano lessons but her exposure to jazz music was thanks to her grandparents. She began performing in bars and restaurants after she clocked 15.

A member of a jazz student group when she was in high school, Krall was awarded a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She was there from 1981 to 1983 after which she decided to go to Los Angeles to pursue her musical career. However, she would soon be back in Canada before going on to release her debut album, Stepping Out in 1993.

The success of her first album helped Diana Krall to gain the attention of Grammy-winning producer, Tommy LiPuma who went on to produce her next album, Only Trust Your Heart in 1995. The next year, she released All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio which did not only remain in the Billboard jazz charts for 70 weeks but also gained her a Grammy nomination.

From then on, there has been no stopping for Krall who as of 2018, has released 12 more albums. In the process, she has sold millions of her albums and has won many awards including five Grammy Awards from 8 nominations, a Western Canadian Music Award, eight Juno Awards, three National Jazz Awards, and three Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. Also, she has been inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame and was awarded the Officer of the Order of Canada in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
