Famous for a number of her singles that made waves, including such popular singles as “Mani për Money,” “E Dehun,” and “A Po Don”, Era Istrefi has succeeded in making it to the top mostly for writing most of her lyrics in the Kosovar Gheg Albanian dialect.
At the beginning, the Albanian-Kosovar singer/songwriter Era Istrefi had hard times trying to figure out which career path she would follow, either to pursue her educational career which could sort out a good and comfortable job, or to follow in the footsteps of her mum and famous sister in pursuit of her music career which could make her famous. Her final decision to go with the latter seems to have paid off for her as she became famous not just for writing her lyrics in the Kosovar Gheg Albanian dialect but also for her successes in combining elements of electronic, pop, and reggae music in her recordings and according to her, she would make the same choice over and over again, as making music was her dream ever since she was a kid.
Biography – Who is Era Istrefi?
Era Istrefi is an Albanian-Kosovar singer/songwriter born to a music-loving family on July 4, 1995, in Pristina in the former Yugoslavia. Era followed in the footsteps of her mum who was a singer in the 1980’s and 1990’s and her popular older sister, Nora Istrefi who is also a famous singer. She became a star in her native country Kosovo after the release of her debut single Mani per money in 2013. Her fame continued to rise locally on the dropping of other successful songs such as A po do, 13, E dehun and much more.
Late in 2015, she dropped another single BonBon which got international recognition. The video of the song instantly went viral, reaching over 500 million views on YouTube. The song got so much approval from other countries worldwide that she had to do an English version of the song, and it made people compare her to other popular female celebrities like Australian sensation Sia and Barbadian icon .
Early 2016, she signed with popular labels Sony music entertainment and Ultra music. She released the English version of BonBon in June 2016 under the labels and went on to release other singles like Redrum, No I love you which she did in collaboration with French Montana. It was officially announced that her upcoming album will be recorded in collaboration with RCA records.
In 2014, back at her native country of Kosovo, she received huge criticism for her music video E Duhun which was shot at an abandoned church in Kristina called Church of Christ the savior. She was accused of being blasphemous and acting demonically for her semi-nude dancing in and around the church.
The talented young artist is one of the few artists assigned to making the official song of the Russia 2018 FIFA World cup. Other artists involved are, music producer Diplo and legendary Actor . The world cup official theme song Live It Up was released on May 25, 2018.
Era Istrefi’s Family
Era Istrefi is a duel nationalist of both Kosovo and Albania. She was born in Pristina, Kosovo to late filmmaker and journalist Nezir Istrefi and retired singer Susana Tahirsylaj. Era was raised along with her 3 other siblings- Nora Istrefi, Nita Istrefi both girls and her brother Bledi Istrefi. Her father died in 2004 when she was only 10 years old, Suzana Tahirsylaj had to choose between her career as a singer and taking care of her kids, and her decision was to retire her career as an entertainer in other to be there for her children.
Singing definitely runs in the veins of the ladies in the Istrefi family. Their mother Suzana and Era aren’t the only singers in the family, the first daughter Nora Istrefi is also a singer and is very popular in her country. Nora is an R&B singer born March 25, 1986, and is married to fellow entertainer Robert Berisha. The couple has been married for close to 4 years now and they have a daughter named Renè. Nora kicked off her music career at 18 and became popular for her songs like Le mama and Big love which topped several charts.
