Garrett Hedlund’s Early Life

The Hollywood star was born Garrett John Hedlund on September 3, 1984, to a Swedish father and a German-Norwegian mother in Roseau, Minnesota. He is the third of three children which include his brother, Nathaniel and his sister, Amanda. Garrett spent his juvenile years on a secluded beef cattle farm close to Wannaska, Roseau County, California. However, in his 10th grade, he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona to go live with his mother where he did some menial jobs and was able to save enough money to take acting lessons from Coach Jean Fowler.

The ambitious youngster also sought modeling deals and started modeling in his teenage years. His first job was for the Teen magazine and a retail company, L.L. Bean which specializes in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment. Garrett Hedlund later moved to Los Angeles following his graduation from high school to pursue a career in acting. About a month after his arrival, he landed his first major role as Patroclus in the 2004 epic adventure action movie, Troy which afforded him the opportunity to share quality screen time with Hollywood bigwigs like , Diane Kruger, , amongst others.

After his performance in Troy, there was nowhere else for the young actor to go but up. Hedlund’s next feature film was the 2004 Friday Night Lights, where he played the role of Don Billingsley, a high school football player alongside Bill Thornton, Tim McGraw, and Connie Britton. In 2005, he starred in the thriller flick, Four Brothers as Jack Mercer, for which he was nominated for a Black Reel Award for Best Ensemble. The next year, Garrett Hedlund took one of the lead roles as Murtagh in Stefen Fangmeier’s film version of Christopher Paolini’s Eragon. He has also starred alongside Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman, and as Harlan Wilson in the comedy-drama Georgia Rules, and as Billy Darley in Death Sentence.

In 2010, Hedlund played the role of Sam Flynn in the sequel to the 1982 movie Tron which was titled, Tron: Legacy. His role in this movie fetched him three award nominations which were the Maui Film Festival Rising Star Award, Young Hollywood Award for Actor of the Year, and Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor- he won the first two. That same year, Garrett Hedlund accepted the lead role of singer-songwriter Beau Hutton, in Country Strong even though he knew nothing about Country music. However, with the help of Director Shana Feste, he was able to nurture his musical talent and performed outstandingly well. He wound up recording a few songs for the film including its soundtrack “Chances are” and “Give It To Me”, a duet with his co-star, Leighton Meester.
