Hans Zimmer is a German composer, born in Frankfurt am Main in West Germany on September 12, 1957. He lived in Konigsstein-Falkenstein as a young child, playing the piano at his home. He had piano lessons briefly but Hans disliked the discipline of formal lessons. He chose, instead, to become a self-taught instrumentalist. According to Hans, his mother was a musician and his father was an engineer and inventor. He moved to London as a teenager where he completed his formal education at the Hurtwood House school.

He is currently married to Suzanne Zimmer and the couple has three children together. He previously had a daughter with his first wife, Vicki Carolin.

Hans Zimmer – Career

Early on in his career, Hans played keyboards and synthesizers in the 1970s with the band, Krakatoa. He also worked with the Buggles for awhile before moving on to work for the Italian group, Krisma. He was also a featured synthesist for Krisma’s third album. Before he found his calling in film scoring, Hans Zimmer worked with several bands and wrote advertising jingles.

His first foray into film scoring was in the 1980s when he partnered up with Stanley Myers, a prolific film composer. Stanley and Hans co-founded the London-based Lillie Yard recording studio. Both composers worked on a few films together including Moonlighting in 1982 and Insignificance in 1985. Hans Zimmer then scored his first movie alone for Terminal Exposure in 1987.

Hans Zimmer’s big Hollywood Film Scoring moment came in 1988 when he composed the score Rain man. His score for the movie was nominated for an Academy Award in 1989. He then followed up Rain Man with the score for Driving Miss Daisy.

The star grew further in the 90s and he worked on classic works like Thelma & Louise. His work on the 1992 film, The Power of One drew the attention of Disney and they signed him up to score the animation movie, The Lion King. He won multiple awards for his work on the classic animation, including an academy award for the best original score, two Grammys and a golden globe.

Zimmer’s streak in the 90s was not yet over. In 1995, he provided the score for Crimson Tide and won a Grammy Award for it. In 1998, for the movie, The Thin Red Line, he composed and recorded six and a half hours of music before a single scene was shot. His score for the movie is considered one of his greatest works. In the movie, the German composer used a nine-minute cue named The Journey to the Line at the climax of the film. It has since been used in numerous trailers and video games and earned the nickname ‘the forbidden cue’ due to its popularity to the point of being overused by filmmakers.

By the 2000s, Zimmer had become the defacto composer for movies by the best directors and studio blockbusters. He composed scores for movies like Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, Hannibal, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean series and the Batman Trilogy. He also composed for video games, composing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the game, Crysis 2.

Some of Han Zimmer’s most recent work includes the intro to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the live-action remake of The Lion King, Blade Runner 2049 and Interstellar.

He has won a lot of awards for his work over the course of his career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review, the BMI’s Richard Kirk Award for lifetime achievement, among many others.
