Jackie Shroff is one of the veteran actors in the arena with close to 4 decades of experience. He rose to stardom in 1983 after appearing in the film Hero and has since then been cast in over 200 films in 11 languages such as Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati.

Who Is Jackie Shroff? Bio, Age

Jackie Shroff is one of the most famous and best on-screen personalities in the Indian entertainment industry. He was born Jai Kishan Kakubhai Shroff on the first day of February 1957 into Gujarati-speaking family in Udgir, Maharashtra.

Shroff regarded himself as a local toughie prior to making his entry into the movie industry. Consequent to lack of fund, Jackie dropped out of school after completing his 11th standard at Masters Tutorial High School, Nana Chowk. He worked as a travel agent in a local company, Trade Wings and also modeled as a young boy, appearing in a few commercials such as Savage Perfumes after he was spotted by an advertising agency accountant at a bus stand. His first modeling job was a photo shoot for a suiting-shirting company which set him on his path to fame in the make-believe world.

In 1973, Jackie debuted as an actor in a minor role as a villain in Heera Panna followed by Swami Dada, both directed by Dev Anand. Following the bit roles, he clinched his first lead role in 1983 in a Subhash Ghai film Hero. The film was critically and commercially successful shooting him into the limelight and marking the beginning of his working relationship with Ghai.

One thing about him during his early days in the entertainment industry was that he never said no to any role which he cites as a major weakness. A major weakness because it led to many emotional decisions that cost him plum offers which led to some not too good choices like Boom, Kisan and Ek – The Power Of One, as a result of him being engaged by the time a good offer is available.

However, after he clicked on stardom with Hero, he starred in several box-office hits in the ’80’s like Andar Baahar co-starring  Jaanoo, Yudh, Karma which became the highest-grossing film of 1986. Others include critically acclaimed but box-office failures such as Kaash, DahleezSachché Ká Bol-Bálá which were subsequently followed by commercial successes like Ram Lakhan, Parinda (won him Filmfare award for best actor), Tridev.

In 1990’s he also appeared in successful films including Saudagar, Angaar, Gardish, where he played the role of a youth fighting against his corruption and crime infested society is considered one of his best roles till date.

Although Jackie became a household name with his 1983 film Hero, he has as well established a presence in a number of supporting roles and being versatile, has appeared in a variety of roles such as heroic, villainous, comic and even played a ghost in the 2006 film Bhoot Unkle. His film credits since 2000 include Devdas, Mission Kashmir, Refugee, Jung, Married 2 America, Sarkar 3, Dhoom 3, Kahin Hai Mera Pyar, Hum Baja Bajaa Denge, Brothers, Khuji. He would appear alongside his son in Student of the Year 2.

Jackie’s father was a Gujarati Hindu astrologer, Kakulal Harilal Shroff while his mother, Amrita “Rita” Kakulal Shroff was a homemaker. He had an older brother, Hemant who died after he drowned at the age of 17 while attempting to save someone. Jackie was only 10 then.

Jackie’s mother, an Uyghur from Kazakhstan had quite an interesting story, one of migration and finding love. She came with her mother and six sisters from central Asia to Bombay where she met Kakulal. After they got married, they lived in a chawl at Teen Batti, Malabar Hill before moving to Bandra where they lived in a bungalow named Le Pepeyon. Originally a Muslim named Hurunnisa Muratovna Mashurova, she converted after marriage and adopted the name, Rita.

Jackie married his longtime girlfriend, Ayesha Dutt, a model turned film producer on June 5, 1987. Ayesha was born on June 5, 1960, to a Bengali pilot, Ranjan Dutt and a Belgian woman Claude Marie Dutt De Cavey. The couple founded the Jackie Shroff Entertainment Limited which is a media company and jointly owned 10% shares in Sony TV until 2012 when they sold their stake.

They have managed to build a close-knit family of four including a son and a daughter. Their son Hemant Jai popularly known as Tiger Shroff who was born on March 2, 1990, has also joined his father in the film industry where he is winning hearts with his martial arts skills and effortless dancing. While his father broke out as an actor in the film Hero, Tiger shot into the limelight with his Bollywood debut in Heropanti (2014). A trained martial artist, he is a fifth-degree black belt holder in Taekwondo and enjoys dancing as a hobby since he was a kid. He mentions , , and as his idols.

Krishna Shroff is the name of their daughter. She was born on January 21, 1993. Unlike her father and big brother, she is interested in directing rather than acting. Krishna is also an Instagram celebrity, a documentary maker as well as a sports coach.
