The name Jake Coker will definitely ring a bell if you are a lover of American football and more if you are a big fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide whom he led to a national championship in 2015.
Who is Jake Coker?
He was born Bryant Jacob Coker August 4, 1992. He attended St. Paul’s Episcopal School Alabama, where he played for both the basketball and football teams. After high school, he proceeded to Florida State University where he also became very much involved in the school football team.

His Early Life and Career
As a freshman at Florida state university, Coker was redshirted for the whole of 2010 season, the following year, he became a backup to EJ Manuel, appearing in three games and completing three-of-five passes for 45 yards and one touchdown.
In 2013, he competed with Jameis Winston for the post of a quarterback but Winston won the job and Coker served as his backup until a knee injury caused him to miss the rest of the season. In total, he appeared in six games, 18 of 36 for 250 yards and one interception.
When Coker transferred from Florida State University to the University of Alabama in 2014, he didn’t have to be redshirted like he was at his former institution, he was immediately eligible to play and took the opportunity with both hands.
Now at Alabama, he competed for the Crimson Tide’s starting job and lost to Blake Sims and had to again, serve as a backup. Coker is not one to take a no for an answer, in 2015, he again competed for the starting job and this time, won the competition and helped lead the Crimson Tide to win the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Clemson Tigers, with a final score of 45–40.
In 2016, Coker became the starting quarterback for the South in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. He was 3-of-8 passing for 23 yards and led his team to the first touchdown of the game.
Following his past successes and after going undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, in April 2016, he signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals.
He was let off the team in August 2016, as part of a roster cut to 75 players. Unable to fully recover from a knee surgery, Coker was forced to retire in April 2017.
His Family and Siblings
Coker’s family is one full of athletes and he just came and fell into place. Except for his elder brother, Patrick Brown, who serves as a U.S. Air Force captain and an A-10 Warthog pilot, the rest of his family appears to be in the athletic business.
It may not be totally out of place to say that Coker lived his grandfather’s dream, who for his service to the country in Korea couldn’t live his dreams of becoming a professional American Footballer. Coker’s grandfather was said to have been drafted by both the Boston Celtics and New York Yankees but never got a chance to play as a pro.
Coker’s half-sister Shelley Spires plays volleyball Air Force. It is on record that she had played at St. Paul’s Episcopal, competed at the club level before moving over to Air Force – where she competed with the track and field team and earned the Newcomer of the Year award.
It is also on records that she had during high school, set the records straights in the state of Alabama, scoring a record of 5,000 points in 2014 and winning the title by nearly 700 points.
His younger brother (half-brother), Peyton Spires is also a high school basketball standout at St. Paul’s Episcopal. So you see, the whole family is in one way or the other into sports.

In 2017, the former Alabama quarterback and national champion, on bended knees, proposed to his sweetheart. They are definitely still together as there have not been any news or rumours of their break-up/separation, we should probably be hearing the wedding bells anytime soon.
