Jon Hamm’s Bio

The American actor’s real name is Jonathan Daniel Hamm, he was born on March 10, 1971, in St. Louis, Missouri and was an only child of his parents. His father, Daniel Hamm, was a manager for a family truck company, while his mother, Deborah Garner, was a secretary. They both got divorced when Jon was just two years old, with his mother, Deborah, having custody of young Jon. They lived in Creve Coeur but Deborah would die of colon cancer as Jon Hamm turned nine, which brought about a move to Clayton, Missouri to live with his father.

He attended a private high school – John Burroughs School in Ladue and had his acting debut as a child when he was chosen during his first grade to play Winne the Pooh. Another opportunity came when he appeared in the play Godspell and was cast as Judas at age 16.

While in high school, Jon was an avid sports lover; he participated in quite a number of sports such as football, baseball, and swimming. He was also popular for dating now professional actress Sarah Clarke but in the year when he turned 20, his father died.

Upon graduation in 1989, he received admission to the University of Texas and became a member of a fraternity group called Sigma Nu but his membership did not last long due to an arrest for bad behavior. Soon after, he got a scholarship to study English at the University of Missouri in his home town. During college, he got a job as a daycare teacher and was often cast in some of the University’s production plays.

After bagging a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Jon still stayed in Missouri, teaching eighth grades acting at his alma mater. Moving on from teaching, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1995 to pursue a career in acting. With jobs not coming his way, he worked as a waiter and a set designer while still going for auditions. He set a five-year target that would have seen him return to Missouri if he didn’t land jobs before 30. However, the tables turned before his 30th birthday and he stayed put.

Career

Jon Hamm’s official debut in television came as a contestant in a 1996 TV show The Big Date, but his professional acting career started with his small appearance in an episode of Ally McBeal as the Gorgeous Guy at Bar. Then he made his first feature film in 2002 playing the role of Young Pilot No. 2 in the astronaut adventure film Cowboys. He did more TV show appearances in the year 2000 and from then to 2001, he was cast in 18 episodes of Providence as Burt Ridley.

In 2001, he appeared in the comedy Kissing Jessica Stein which was co-written by ex-girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt. Next was the war film We Were Soldiers where he appeared in as Capt. Matt Dillon in 2002.

From 2002 to 2007, the young star received more television projects that he became very famous for including Gilmore Girls, The Division, CSI: Miami, Point Pleasant, Charmed, Numb3rs, Related, The Unit, What About Brain, and The Sarah Silverman Program.

Jon Hamm went back to film in 2006 with Ira & Abby starring as Ronnie and then did a movie in 2007 called The Ten starring also as Chris Knarl. The year 2007 ushered in Jon’s major breakthrough in his career as he was chosen over 80 candidates to be the lead character – an advertising executive Don Draper in the AMC series Mad Men. This role landed him international recognition, numerous nominations, and awards as he starred alongside Eric Ladin.

He received about 12 Emmy nominations for acting, directing and producing but won two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Television Series-Drama both in 2008 and 2016. Jon finally got his Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2015 during the show’s final season.

During his time as host for 10 episodes of the Saturday Night Live Show from 2008 to 2015, a list of substantial films followed, adding to his bolstering career such as The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), Stolen (2009), The Town (2010), Howl (2010), Sucker Punch (2011), Bridesmaids (2011), Friends with Kids (2012) and Million Dollars Arm (2014).

From December 2012 to December 2013 Jon starred alongside in A Young Doctor’s Notebook, acting as Daniel’s older self Dr. Vladimir Bomgard. Daniel also introduced him to the sports, Cricket, of which he is now a fan.

In 2013, he hosted the television special ESPY Awards and starred in the television film Clear History. Jon played alongside and Zach Galifianakis for the comedy film Keeping Up with the Joneses which was released in October 2016.
