Kemba Walker is an American professional basketball player and plays for the Charlotte Hornets. In the National Basketball Association (NBA) draft of 2011, he was ninth overall pick by the then Charlotte Bobcats. Walker was named Big East championship’s most outstanding player and he led the Huskies to the championship in 2011. That same year, he was named the NCAA championship’s most outstanding player. He has been an All-Star NBA player. Before joining the NBA, he played on the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team.

Who is Kemba Walker?

Walker was born on May 8, 1990, to Paul and Andrea Walker in the Bronx, New York. He has three siblings; a sister, and two brothers. He attended Rice High School, in Harlem New York where he played in the school’s basketball team and averaged 18.2 points and 5.3 assists per game in his senior year. He graduated from Rice in 2008 and played in the New York Gauchos AAU basketball program. During this period, he played alongside other Big East players like Danny Jennings, Jordan Theodore, and Devin Hill.

The Gauchos finished number one in the nation while he was with the team. Rivals.com ranked Walker number 5 point guard and number 14 player nationally in 2008. After getting into University of Connecticut (UConn), Walker played every game of his freshman year and was instrumental to the team achieving a number one seed in NCAA Tournament of 2009.

Even though he was not a starting player in most games, he managed to garner an average 25.5 minutes per game, an outstanding feat for a non-starter. The same year, he helped get the Huskies up to the final four. In the following season (2009-2010) he featured in all the Huskies’ 34 games. That season UConn got No. 4 seed in the National Invitation Tournament. He was selected First Team United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District in 2010.

Walker became a national leading scorer in his junior year with an average 26.7 points 3.8 assists and 5 rebounds per game. Sports Illustrated featured him on one of its regional covers. This propelled Walker’s popularity as an outstanding player. He was named MVP of the Big East Tournament and he helped the UConn team win the University of Louisville in the Big East Championship game in 2011.

He scored a total 130 points in five games, this was a notable record and the highest number of points scored in the 15 prior seasons of any conference tournament. This performance led UConn to become the first school to get to the conference championship through five games in five days. The USBWA named him a first-team All- American.

Walker’s performance during the 2010-2011 season also led to his being picked by Fox Sports to the Second Team All American in addition to being named as a finalist for College Basketball Player of the Year honors. He won the Bob Cousy Award for the top point guard in the nation and the NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player. The same year, Walker was added to the Huskies of Honor, a feat no one had achieved since its inauguration in 2006.

The Charlotte Bobcats agreed to a rookie contract with Kemba Walker in December 2011, and he soon became the team’s starting point guard for the season after Darryl Gerrard Augustin suffered an injury. Walker earned his first triple-double in a January 2012 game against the Washington Wizards. During this game, he scored 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. That same year he was part of the Rising Stars Challenge during the All-Star Weekend. Walker’s season averaged 17.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 5.7 assists, for the 2012-2013 season. He was selected to the 2013 Rising Stars Challenge alongside teammate Kidd-Gilchrist.
