Malik was born on June 20, 1996, in Detroit, Michigan to Greg McDowell (father) and Joya Crowe (mother). He is of African American ethnicity and of American nationality. In December of that same year, he announced his intention to enter the 2017 NFL Draft as he had already signed with an agent.

Malik McDowell was drafted into the apex American football league as the 35th overall in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks as a much needed Defensive tackle to boost their team.
