Marvin Bagley III was born on the 14th of March 1999, in Tempe, Arizona as the first son of Marcus Bagley Jr. and his wife Tracy Caldwell. His basketball career began in Corona del Sol High School where as a freshman he led his varsity team to the state championship. In his sophomore year, he transferred to Hillcrest Prep in Phoenix where he became teammates with future number 1 draft pick, Deandre Ayton.

However, Bagley’s stay at Hillcrest was shortlived due to the program’s bad reputation. Bagley left for Chatsworth, California where he attended Sierra Canyon School. But then, due to California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) rules, Bagley was ruled ineligible to play in his first year in the school. He began playing in his junior season where he averaged 24.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and two steals from 29 games. He was named to the All-USA Today First-team, 2017.

A 5-star high school recruit, Bagley first received a scholarship offer from Northern Arizona University at the age of 14. However, after his reclassification in 2017, Bagley became eligible for the 2018 NCAA season. Snubbing Arizona University’s offer, Bagley proceeded to Duke where he shattered decades-old records. He ended his freshman season as the ACC Player of the Year, and ACC Rookie of the Year. He also made it to the Consensus first-team All-American and won the Pete Newell Big Man Award.

Marvin Bagley III hails from a very athletic family. As a matter of fact, he has basketball in his very veins down to his third generation. His maternal grandfather Joe Caldwell was an NBA star in his own right. He played in the NBA for 6 seasons (1964–1970) before hopping to rival American Basketball Association (ABA) where he played for 5 seasons before his career ended in 1975 due to a controversy involving his alleged influence on his teammate Marvin Barnes’ decision to leave the Carolina Cougars. He played as a guard/forward and was an All-Star in both leagues. Arizona State University in November 2010 retired his number 32.

Marvin’s father Marvin Bagley Jr. was a college footballer who played for North Carolina A&T and later played professionally for the Arena Football League’s Arizona Rattlers. It was while playing in the indoor league that he came to meet his future wife/Marvin’s mother Tracy Caldwell. Bagley’s father has long been the basketball coach of AAU team, Nike Phamily.

Marvin Bagley III’s siblings include two younger brothers – Marcus Bagley and Martay Bagley. His middle brother Marcus is already following in Marvins’ footsteps. He played high school basketball in Sierra Canyon before transferring in October 2017 to Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has already received offers from Arizona State and UCLA.
