Famous for her work in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a film she wrote and acted in, is the Canadian-American screenwriter, director, producer and actress Nia Vardalos. Who is Nia Vardalos?

In the year 1962, on the 24th of September in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Nia Vardalos was born and named Antonia Eugenia Vardalos in a Greek-Canadian family which had as its patriarch; a land developer – Constantine “Gus” Vardalos and his wife; an accountant and homemaker Doreen Christakis. Nia has as her sisters Nancy Vardalos Ginakes and another who we obtained her name to be Marianne. Considering that her parents had good jobs, Nia can be said to have had a normal and fun childhood, thus she went to college to pursue her dreams.

Growing, Nia Vardalos schooled at St. George School and Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg before she enrolled at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where she graduated from with a BFA in Theatre.

After college, she launched her career in 1996 with minor roles in The Drew Carey Show and Two Guys and a Girl. At this same time, Nia lent her voice for the 1996 radio adaptation of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Her big break as an actress came in the new millennium, in the year 2002 while playing the role of Toula Portokalos, a woman who had struggles finding love in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, a film which she wrote herself.

For her work here, Nia Vardalos was Nominated for many awards both as a writer and an actress, she went on to win some like the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association Award for Best Original Screenplay and the American Screenwriters Association Award – Discover Screenwriting Award, in addition to winning the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Newcomer and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance.

Following the success of the film, Nia Vardalos’ career got a lot busier with roles in other films like Connie and Carla (2004) as Connie (writer), I Hate Valentine’s Day (2009) as Genevieve, as a writer and director in Dealin’ with Idiots (2013) where she played the character of Ava Morris and 2016 My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 as Toula Portokalos the writer.

Beginning in the year 1996, Nia has done some quality works in television series like High Incident (1996) an uncredited role in episode: “Father Knows Best,” Two Guys and a Girl (1999) as Evelyn in episode: “Career Day,” My Big Fat Greek Life (2003) where she worked as a writer and executive producer in 7 episodes.

Continuing, we saw Nia Vardalos in Drop Dead Diva (2009) as Lisa Shane in the episode: “What If?” while between 2013-14 she was in the famous Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Attorney Minonna Efron in 3 episodes. More recently in the year 2016, she was with Ian Gomez in 2016 The Great American Baking Show and in 2018 Nia lent her voice as Selene in DuckTales episode: “The Spear of Selene.”

Husband and Daughter

On September 5, 1993, she married her husband  an American television actor in Winnipeg’s St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Prior to their marriage, he converted to Greek Orthodoxy. There’s been no news about a biological child between the two, but they did adopt a little girl named Illaria in the year 2008.

Ian Gomez was born December 24, 1965, and is popular for his work in Felicity as Javier and in Cougar Town where he played the character of Andy. He has also acted in several of his wife’s films like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, I Hate Valentine’s Day, Connie and Carla, etc.

Sadly, not even the closeness of their careers would keep the love between them going. After 23 years of marriage, Nia Vardalos filled for divorce from her husband citing regular irreconcilable differences. We in July 2018 that the two have been “respectfully separated from each other” since June 2017. Nia is praying the court for “joint legal and physical custody” of their daughter.
