Who Is Owen Jones?

Owen Peter Jones was born to Rob Jones and Ruth Aylett Jones in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, on the 8th of August 1984. His father was a trade union steward and local authority personnel, while his mother worked at the University of Salford as an IT lecturer. Though Owen was practically raised in Stockport, Greater Manchester, he did live in Falkirk, Scotland for a brief period. He is one person who likes to describe himself with the “fourth-generation socialist” tag. This, in the sense that his grandfather was a communist party member while his parents first met each other when they were members of a militant group known as Trotskyist.

As a kid, he got educated in Ridge Danyers Sixth Form College, and later Bramhall High School. For his university education, he gained admission into the University College, Oxford to study History. After graduating from the university in 2005, he decided to further for a Masters degree in U.S. History at the same institution. He rounded up his Masters in 2007.

Career

Before his sojourn into the world of journalism, Owen Jones worked with the Labour Party MP John McDonnell, for whom he functioned as a researcher and backbencher. Owen Jones then released his first book in 2011 which he titled The book was released to favorable acclaim because of the issues he discussed such as the stereotypical nature of certain parts of the working class in Britain as well as his use of “Chav” which is a pejorative term. The local and international media commended his work and it also went on to be selected as part of the top 10 non-fictional books of 2011.

This selection was made by one of The New York Times’ critics, Dwight Garner. Although he was chosen to be a part of the select few commentators for the 2011 England riots, he experienced pressure in his reporting and commenting as he was told by higher officials to change the tone of his narrative from “Mindless Criminality,” to something more subtle. This made him believe strongly that the government possibly had a hand in the riot happening in the first place. As a columnist, he first worked with The Guardian before moving to write for New Stateman. After this, he moved on to write for The Independent.

In an article published by The independent, in August 2012, Owen Jones heavily criticized U.S. military power as well as American exceptionalism. Also in the course of his career, Owen Jones has made a lot of television appearances as a political commentator on platforms such as; Sky News, Channel 4 News, BBC One’s Question Time, BBC News shows, and ITV’s Daybreak.

Is He Gay?

One thing is for sure, Owen Jones is a gay man who has never had the need to hide his sexuality because he has always been proud of it. More so, being that he grew up in a supportive environment as well as the acceptance showed him by his close family and relatives, he has been quite comfortable in his own skin. In addition, Owen is very vocal about the issues and struggles of the LGBT community as he has written extensively on homophobia, as well as what he calls the psychologically damaging effect of conversion therapy. He also opposes identity politics and regularly converses about sexism.
