Why would anyone choose to fight for a living? The question has become quite common among those who are not big fans of the combat sports and several reasons have been offered with many believing its a profession for those struggling with anger issues. While this sentiment is not necessarily true, it’s a fact that people settle for a career in this field due to various differing incentives. For Paulo Costa, his motivation is a simple one – he’s fascinated by fighting.
If you have been keeping up with the activities of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), then it’s most likely you know a handful of things about this mixed martial artist. Although he is relatively new to the UFC, he leapt onto the promotion radar sometime in March 2017 after he triumphed over the more experienced South African fighter, Garreth Mclellan. Despite being a newcomer, Costa conquered Mclellan who has been with the UFC since 2015, defeating him in the first round via TKO. Want to learn more about this bloke? Tag along…
Who Is Paulo Costa?
Granted that this mixed martial artist is known to many as Paulo Borrachinha and “The Eraser”, he was named Paulo Henrique Costa after he was born on the 21st of April, 1991. His place of birth was in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Even with the fame that came to Paulo for his status as a fighter, details of his upbringing and family are hard to come by. Hardly can anyone tell what his childhood was like and what’s up with his parents and siblings. One thing though, it is said that he got his Borrachinha nickname from his older brother called the rubber man. Borrachinha means “little rubber”.
From what we have pieced, Paulo Costa was a realtor before he started fighting. As mentioned earlier, he started treading this path because he was fascinated by it, this was in 2012. True, the Brazilian artist now competes under the UFC’s middleweight division but he did not make his MMA debut with the promotion. He started fighting in his home country.
He wasted no time in proving himself to be a fine fighter. Beyond not suffering any defeat, he became Mineiro champion of Jiu-jitsu, MMA Face to Face Event Middleweight champ, and that of the Jungle Fight Event. In view of that, it wasn’t a surprise when he was picked to fight in The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 3. As Paulo’s performance in the UFC-produced reality series was remarkable, it paved a way for his UFC debut in 2017.
After he made a grand entrance with defeating McLellan, The Eraser went on to fight Oluwale Bamgbose. He triumphed over the Nigerian-American through TKO in the second round. Paulo and UFC would come to have a little financial issue over a new contract. This was resolved after he fought and beat Johny Hendricks. Thus far, the Brazilian fighter remains undefeated as he has won all his 12 fights; 11 via knockouts and one by submission.
His Height, Weight, And Body Measurements
Even though many have come to regard skill, experience, and intelligence as the most important factors that determine the winner of a fight between two competing combatants, no expert in combat sports would deny that there are certain disadvantages caused by the physical attributes of a fighter; particularly, height and weight.
Larger MMA fighters often have an advantage when they face smaller fighters with the same set of skills like they do. The weight classes in combat sports are meant to manage this and keep things balanced as much as possible.
Unfortunately, nothing has (can) been done to manage the height advantage. For instance, while the shorter fighter would have to punch upwards and have a hard time with his strikes reaching his opponent, the taller fighter would enjoy a pronounced advantage as he would be able to fire his shots from a safe distance, reaching his aims and easily evading those directed at him.
Paulo Costa has little to worry about in terms of height as he is an inch taller than 6 feet (6′ 1″). The height is perfect for his 84 kg (185 lb) weight. His reach is 72 inches and his leg reach, 39 inches.
