A baseball pitcher in Major League Baseball, Dellin Betances has played for the New York Yankees in his home state of New York since his professional career began with the 2011 MLB Draft.

Dellin was born in Washington Heights, Manhattan on March 23, 1988. As a kid, he supported New York Yankees. He and his family went to many of their games, and this was instrumental in his decision to choose baseball over basketball.

Betances got his high school education from Progress High School in Brooklyn. In his freshman year, he was revered for his fearsome fastballs. By his junior year, he could throw the ball at 90 miles per hour. In the same year, the tall kid from Manhattan became the first New York City player ever to receive the Aflac All-American honour. He was ranked the tenth best high school prospect in 2006.

Dellin Betances nearly missed an opportunity to go pro in the 2006 NBA Draft due to his earlier commitment to play for Vanderbilt University’s Commodores. However, the New York Yankees selected him in the draft’s eight round and persuaded him to ditch Vanderbilt by giving him a $1 million sign-on bonus.

Starting from 2007, he played for the Staten Island Yankees, Charleston RiverDogs, Tampa Yankees, Trenton Thunders and other teams rated Class-A and above.

On September 8, 2008, Dellin was promoted to the majors and he made his debut for the Yankees on September 22, 2008. However, he would only make two appearances that season. He spent the next two campaigns with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was recalled on August 11 and optioned back to Scranton four days later. He only returned to the Yankees in September due to the League’s expanded roster.

The 2014 season proved to be Dillen Betances’s break out year. He made the season Opening Day roster and ended the campaign as the first rookie pitcher since Spec Shea in 1947 to be named to the All-Star Game lineup. The end of 2014 also saw him usurp Mariano Rivera to become the relief pitcher in Yankees history with the highest number of strikeouts. He was edged out by Matt Shoemaker and Jose Abreu to the American League Rookie of the Year award.

In 2015, he became the first-ever Yankees reliever to achieve 100 strikeouts in consecutive seasons. and he did it in fewer innings than his 2014 record. He was also named to the All-Star Game lineup for the second season in a row.

Starting in the 2016 season, Dellin formed a terrific triumvirate with Aroldis Chapman and Miller to strike terror in the heart of opposing hitters. They were affectionately referred to by Yankee fans as “No Runs-D.M.C”. Again, he would end the campaign on the All-Star Game lineup, after striking out over 100 batters in 73 appearances.

In May 2017, Dillen Betances became the closer for the Yankees following the unavailability of Chapman and Miller, who were later traded. On August 2, 2017, he hit an immaculate inning, the sixth-ever in the history of the Yankees. Despite being ejected on August 24, 2017, for hitting James McCann with a pitch, the Yankees ace still made it to the All-Star Game lineup for his fourth consecutive season.

Betances met his wife Janisa in December 2007. They were just nineteen at the time. According to Janisa, sparks flew on their first meeting as they immediately warmed up to each other.
