Philip Michael Thomas was born on the 26th of May 1949 in Columbus, Ohio. His father’s name is Louis Diggs while his mother’s name is Lulu. The actor cum musician has seven half-siblings.

Thomas grew up in San Bernardino, California, and started acting in a church theatre group at an early age. He also took to singing in the choir and all these heightened his interest in performing arts. On completing high school in 1967, Thomas headed off to college to study philosophy and religion. He spent just two years in school before realizing that his heart was still in music/acting. He subsequently dropped out and pursued a career in showbiz.

Philip Michael Thomas landed his first professional role in the 1969 San Francisco production of the rock musical, Hair. He spent 18 months with the company before going on to feature in other productions such as No Place to be Somebody, Reggae, New York City, and The Selling of the President.

The San Bernardino native later got his breakthrough on the 80s TV series, Miami Vice. Miami Vice is a police procedural that revolved around two undercover cops, Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett, who bravely confront the Miami criminal underworld. Thomas portrayed the suave Tobbs from 1984 to 1989. His performance fetched him several awards including two NAACP Image Awards for best performance by an actor in a drama series or TV movie.
