Rian, who was born on December 17, 1973, in Silver Spring, Maryland credits his film style to the film, Annie Hall directed by Woody Allen in 1977. Rian’s educational background involved attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts after high school in San Clemente High School in 1992. Although Rian Johnson was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, he spent some time growing up in Colorado before he settled in San Clemente. This movie-maker has a ton of short films in his resume, he made his first feature-length film in 2005. The movie, Brick which introduced Hollywood to the art of Rian took him six years to make, which he spent mostly looking for money to make the film. After six years of shooting promo shots and videos for a preschool for deaf children, Rian was finally able to raise the $500,000 that it took to shoot Brick. The film which starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt debuted at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival to great critical acclaim and was eventually bought by Focus Features for theatrical distribution.
For a lot of artists, their talent is a means to an end, with the end mostly being wealth. For others, however, their talent and what they can create with it is the goal itself. For the second group, money is nothing more than a tool to express their talent. Rian Johnson belongs to the second group. So, even though his movie Brick had opened Hollywood’s eyes to his abilities, the Maryland-born filmmaker chose to keep his focus on independent movies like one of his inspirations, The Coen Brothers.
Rian returned to making smaller projects, including directing a music video for one of his favorite music bands, The Mountain Goats. His follow up movie, while it didn’t take long and had little problems in terms of funding, did not enjoy a similar critical or box office reception as his first movie. The movie, The Brothers Bloom which starred and was an underwhelming project from the man who had produced Brick. Before making the project where it was impossible to please everyone in The Last Jedi, he made Looper in 2012, starring and a reunion with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, it was a sci-fi action thriller. The film received a better reception than The Brothers Bloom and further raised his profile as a filmmaker.
Rian’s work hasn’t been limited to short films and features alone. As a filmmaker, he has worked on thirteen films and four tv shows thus far.
