He was born Richaun Diante Holmes on the 15th of October 1993, in Lockport, Illinois. His parents Richard and Lydecia Holmes who got married in 1984 are both Doctors of Divinity, an advanced academic degree in divinity. Prominent figures like Martin Luther King Jr and Billy Graham were also conferred with the degree.

Since 1990, three years before Holmes was even born, his parents have been senior pastors at Morning View “Word” Church, a Baptist house of worship on Chicago’s south side.

1. He has his brothers to thank for the quality of player he has become

Richaun is the youngest son in his family and has three older brothers. All of his brothers played high school basketball but none quite had what it takes to go pro. However, they posed a tough competition for Richaun when he was a kid which served as a catalyst to rapidly improve his skills. Richaun is the tallest of all of his three brothers.

2. No NCAA Division 1 varsity team showed interest in him until later

Holmes attended his locale Lockport Township high school. He originally played as a guard but after sprouting from 6 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 9 inches, he started playing at the forward position. Despite the rapid sprout in height, Holmes didn’t get any Division I college basketball scholarship offers.

However, after he committed to play for Moraine Valley Community College, Bowling Green came knocking. Holmes played one year at Moraine Valley before transferring to Green. Under the coaching of Chris Jans, he became a more versatile player improving every aspect of his game. His college highlights included Third-team All-MAC in 2014, First-team All-MAC 2015 and MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015.

3. His professional career has shaped up nicely thus far

Richaun Holmes’ NBA career has enjoyed a steady rise. He was signed to a contract on the 31st of July 2015 and on November 9, 2015, he made his first start for the side. He ended the year with a new season-high 18 points. In 2016, Holmes earned a salary of over $1 million from the Sixers.

In early 2017, his career took a dip as he was thrice assigned to the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League. As a result, he missed 16 straight Sixers games between Dec. 16 and Jan. 20. However, the power forward redeemed himself and soon NBA fans got to see more of his skills.

This was in part due to the Sixers trade of Nerlens Noel and the absence of Joel Embiid due to injury. Holmes did have his own part to play as he proved worthy as a fixture in the team’s rotation by outplaying . Towards the end of March 2017, Holmes recorded a new career-high 25 points in a game against the Atlanta Hawks. He joined the Phoenix Suns on the 20th of July 2018.

 

4. Holmes is a family man

Raised with strong family values, Holmes wasted no time in starting his own family. He is a father to a son RJ who was born on the 13th of June 2016. Though he frequently shares photos of his son, Holmes has never shared pictures of the mother of his child. However, in a made on December 7th, 2016, Holmes revealed that he was a married man.
