Among several other things, American businessman, Rick Harrison is a reality television star, an author and the co-founder of the World Famous Gold & Silver Pawn Shop which he started with his father in 1989. Following the massive success recorded by the shop, it’s not only featured on the History series Pawn Stars, it also shattered records, becoming the highest rated program on the History Channel in 2011.

Harrison is among those who decided from an early stage in life that school is not their forte, thus, he dropped out of high school in his tenth grade to pursue his “$2,000-a-week business of selling fake Gucci bags”. Seemingly, the move paid off as he has recorded milestones ever since.

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane on how the mogul we know today started.

Background Information

On March 22, 1965, the renowned businessman was born as Richard Kevin “Rick” Harrison in Davidson, North Carolina. He didn’t get to enjoy a normal childhood like most kids as he had epileptic seizures which began at the age of eight. As a result, he was confined to his bed most of the time, but on the bright side, he became an avid reader of a series of books by John D. Fitzgerald titled The Great Brain. Ten-year-old Utah con artist named Tom D Fitzgerald, the main character in the book played a major role in influencing Harrison’s future endeavors. Notably, the character is able to conjure up money-making schemes.

Rick Harrison dropped out of Taft Middle School, a part of the San Diego Unified School District. His family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in April 1981 as a result of the crumbling state of the family’s real estate business. In 1989, Harrison and his father pioneered the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop and a few years later, the duo was loaning out about $3 million annually, bringing in about $700,000 in interest income.

Harrison also has a reputation as a pawnbroker in Las Vegas where he collects special sports items one of which is a 2001 New England Patriots Super Bowl ring belonging to American football cornerback Brock Williams. He was recognized with the Pawnbroker of the Year Award by the National Pawnbrokers Association for bringing the pawn industry closer to the people.

Rick Harrison made several attempts to make a TV show about a pawn shop to no avail. This was after his shop was featured in the show Insomniac with Dave Attell in 2003. Nevertheless, Brent Montgomery and Colby Gaines of Leftfield Pictures approached him with an idea; They were looking to launch a reality show which would be based in a Las Vegas pawn shop and Harrison’s was the best option.

The show – Pawn Stars features Harrison and his father who is referred to as “The Old Man” in the show. It also features Harrison’s son Corey and Corey’s childhood friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell who is also his employee. Pawn Stars would later become the highest rated program on History Channel. Rick Harrison also appeared on other shows like I Lost My Head in Vegas, iCarly, The Safe and The Middle.

So far, his estimated net worth is pegged at $8 million which basically comes from his salary of $300,000 per season from Pawn Stars.
