Wesley Matthews was born Wesley Joel Matthews Jr. on the 14th of October 1986 in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of two-time NBA Championship winner, Wesley Joel Matthews Sr., and Pam Moore, although it was just his mother who raised him after his father walked out on the family.

The kid attended James Madison Memorial High School where his athletic talents were put on full display as he competed for both the school’s basketball and soccer teams. However, it was with the basketball team that his talents were recognized on a large scale as it earned him the Wisconsin Mr. Basketballl award in 2005 in his senior high school year.

After completing his high school education, Matthews chose to not follow in his father’s footsteps to attend the University of Wisconsin–Madison but rather enrolled at Marquette University where he continued to be the star player on every court he stepped out on. As a freshman, he averaged 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in 23 games. As a sophomore, he averaged 12.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in 34 outings. For his junior year, Matthews managed 11.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 35 games. In his final collegiate season, he earned a Second-team All-Big East mention after averaging college career highs in points (18.3), rebounds (5.7), and assists (2.5) per game.

NBA Career

Despite the little hype Wesley Matthews had built around himself as a college athlete, he went unselected at the 2009 NBA Draft. This, however, did not hamper his dream of making it to the NBA as he subsequently joined the Utah Jazz to play in the Orlando Summer League where he hoped to impress scouts. After the Orlando event, Matthews did not leave things to chance as he joined the Sacramento Kings for the Las Vegas Summer League as well. Before the beginning of the 2009-10 season, the Utah Jazz signed him to a one-year contract and brought him into the fold.

Immediately after joining his new team, the draft reject became a mainstay in the side and was later that year named a starter after the player he was playing as a back up to was traded away. At the end of the season, the Portland Trailblazers offered Matthews a five-year contract worth $34 million which the Jazz was not willing to match, making room for him to swap Utah for Portland.

Wesley Matthews did not leave his career to chance seeing that he made his way into the association through sheer hard work, he worked even harder and soon found himself as a constant feature for his new side. He notably played 250 consecutive NBA games before being forced out by an injury. Matthews’ stay with the Trail Blazers lasted until the expiration of his contract in 2015 when he joined the Dallas Mavericks on a new four-year deal.

He has proven himself to be a valuable addition to the Mavericks roster, chipping in time after time with points from beyond the arc which as of February 2018, places him as the seventh Dallas player to hit 500 3-pointers with the team.
