Will Muschamp is a former American football player now a head coach at the University of South Carolina. Muschamp, the native of Georgia, was also the head coach of the Florida Gators football team of the University of Florida.

Will Muschamp: Biography

Will was born William Larry Muschamp on August 3, 1971, in Rome, Georgia, but his family moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he had his elementary and high school education at Martha Manson Academy and Oak Hall High School respectively.

When his family moved back to Georgia Muschamp then attended the University of Georgia where he became a part of the Georgia Bulldogs football team and played safety. While still an undergraduate, Will was initiated into a social fraternity known as the Kappa Alpha Order (Gamma Chapter). There, he earned a spot on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 1993 and before his graduation in 1994, he was named Defensive “Co-Captain.”

Upon graduation, Muschamp worked as a graduate assistant coach at Auburn University for the 1995 and 1996 seasons and while working under Wayne Hall and Bill Oliver, he was getting his master’s degree in Education. He then served for one year each as the defensive backs coach for the University of West Georgia and Eastern Kentucky University before landing his new career in 2000, as a defensive coordinator at Valdosta State University.

In 2001, Muschamp joined Nicholas Lou Saban Jr (best known as Nick Saban) at the Louisiana State University (LSU) Linebackers Coach. A year later, he became the University’s Defensive Coordinator. His 2003 defense was mentioned as one of the best in the nation. It even helped the nation in scoring defense (11.0 PPG) and total defense (252.2 YPG) during a national championship season. In fact, the LSU won the BCS Championship at the end of the season. The same was the case in 2006 when Muschamp returned to the SEC as Defensive Coordinator for the Auburn Tigers.

Muschamp has also served as the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He gained much reputation for his defenses and his demeanour during games and practices. He even earned the 2007 Broyles Award for the most outstanding assistant coach in college football.

Fast forward to December 12, 2014, Muschamp became the defensive coordinator for the Auburn Tigers after signing a three-year deal worth between $1.6 million and $1.8 million annually. There, he built a good reputation as one of the best skilled and highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football. He was, however, fired in November of the same year after his team lost to Alabama. The following year, he was hired as the head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks where he has made some remarkable achievements including South Carolina’s first winning record in conference play since 2013.

Muschamp is 15-11 in two years at South Carolina. He has also presided over the first, back-to-back, three-win improvements in school history. As the head coach at the University of South Carolina, Will receives $4.2 million, which is a pay rise from his initial $3.1 million he made annually in the first year of his contract with the university as a college coach. The pay which increases annually is expected to reach $5.2 million by 2023. The six-year deal is worth $28.2 million. The pay increase was made possible after he led South Carolina on a 9-4 record in his second season, marking their success.

Muschamp is married to Carol Davis Muschamp from Thomaston, Georgia. The two met and got married in 1999 and they currently have two children namely Jackson and Whit. Carol’s family had Known Muschamp long before she met him. In fact, one of her cousins, Whit Marshall, was was a close friend to one of Muschamp’s teammates and her brother, John Davis, was his roommate at Georgia. Eventually, the two met when Carol visited John.

By the time the two got engaged, Will was already in his first season as a full-time assistant coach at the West Georgia. They got married the following year when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky.
