Weghorst, who was born in Borne, Overijssel, began his career with local clubs RKSV NEO and DETO Twenterand.
He later joined Willem II of the Eredivisie. Despite having the opportunity to break into the first team, he could not do so and so signed for Eerste Divisie club FC Emmen.
On August 10, 2012, he debuted in a match against Dordrecht, which ended 1–1.
Weghorst would score his first goal in professional football a month later, in the derby against Veendam, which Emmen won 2–1.
He appeared in 28 games and scored eight goals in his first season. In addition, Weghorst signed a free transfer contract with Eredivisie team Heracles Almelo after his time with Emmen.
